What is Glengoyne like ?

I am not a connoiseur of malts, having made myself very ill on Glenfiddich one night in my early 20's. In the past 5 years, I have started to develop the taste as a night cap (or two) on the boat. (I must admit to liking Irish stuff too!). Have got quite used to Glenmorangie, mainly.

The reason I ask is that a strange man left a bottle on my doorstep at 0130 this morning! I say strange because I have never actually met him, despite several phone calls. I would have liked to have served him tea and biscuits but the dreaded 0632 to London to earn a crust simply prevented it.

Also strangely, he drove from Plymouth to Lymington to take away my old mirror dinghy spars, sails, rudder and daggerboard, on his way home to Scotland, after a rioutous week in Brittainy from what I could gather.

So I've got rid of the junk out of my garage and acquired a bottle of 10year old Glengoyne.

What should I expect, when I find the right moment to open it?

Not a connoisseur myself, but Glengoyne is a rather nice, warm, Lowland malt made not far from here. The Glengoyne distillery is at the foot of Dumgoyne, the westernmost hill of the Campsie Fells. Rather a nice scramble when we we used to have cold frosty winter days.

Not sure what the appropriate opening occasion should be, but, enjoy it when you do.

It's brilliant stuff. Used to be my second nearest distillery before we moved house! I've been there a few times, and had a great evening blending our own whisky etc there.

The 10 year old is really light and (I think, anyway) quite nutty. Great as an aperitif or a lunch time warmer. Struggles a bit for flavour post-dinner. One of my favourites.

I'm thinking the same strange man came by here on his way north, for a boxed bottle of that same strange mixture was left on my table. He did have tea and biscuits, and a spot of lunch as well, before he left for points north.

P'rhaps someone will ask that 'Lakie' chappie on TOP whether he, too, received a similar benediction...... when TOP resurrects a working server, that is.

Mmmm....

I am beginning to think he bought a cheap job lot from somewhere.

I can tell you this - the 'Glengoyne' is a darn sight better than oil of cloves, and for that I am more than a little thankful, tonight, to our mutual friend DM.
