Late Night Posting Syndrome

Saturday was pretty decent and good sailing weather, though I was only on board doing some wee jobs that I'd been putting off.

Had a great sail to Lamlash and back yesterday, and a good lunch in the Glen Isle Hotel.
Wind veered to east 3 miles out of Ardrossan, so motored for half an hour.
Approaching our pontoon, stuck it into astern, and the leg, which obviously wasn't properly locked down, jumped up, caught it's own rope, wound itself up to the underside of the rear beam, then shattered the main yoke casting and the steering lever casting. blimey.
Spoiled an otherwise terrific day.
Not too bad, now that I've checked, it looks like about £250 quids worth of bits assuming the CV joint is still intact. We'll try to fix it in the water, I don't want to spend the same again getting lifted out and in.

Hopefully it won't cost to much to fix.

Is it easy to check whether or not the leg is locked?

Well, you drop the leg, drive ahead to hear it clonk on, then stop, pull the rope, and if it moves, it's not locked. I'm not sure which bit of my routine failed, but fail it did. It's happened before, but not with such dire results. Usually it just pops out of the water, no harm done, a quick burst ahead will sort it. I think something must be slightly worn.
As I say, it looks like about 250 quids worth of parts. I'm down that way over the next couple of days so will go in and visit Sillette and get the wallet out.

No intention of rubbing salt in wounds, etc but we had a reasonable weekend.

I worked a 14 hour day from a 5am start on Friday, and Joan had a late Girls Night Out that night, so we slept late on Sat and went up to the boat after lunch. Had a short sail before dinner on board.

Sunday had much more wind than the forecast I had seen. Had 10knts minimum plus prolonged squalls above that. Managed some fast sailing down to below Tarbet (Loch Lomond) and return. Joan had just put the kettle on for some generic noodles in a pot before the strongest, and longest squall and had to hang on to it throughout, including a tack. Some sun, but generally cold.

I was up in Appin doing some wee jobs on Shard on Friday night and Saturday. Pretty good weather - until I was driving home and neared Callander. Torrential. Should have stayed in Appin for a single handed sail, or even better offered a sail to Nick and Kathy. Ooops Sorry folks.

Even I found it difficult to decipher.

In fact it was a wholly predicted working weekend. I was whingeing about having unlurked myself on yet another sailing forum just because I'd had a couple of glasses of the red biddy and the thread was a suitable vehicle for displaying a pic (Thanks Donald) of the lovely Silkie on a recent cruise.

Glad to hear that everyone else enjoyed their weekend. Sorry to hear about the end to Alistair's and I hope you resolve the problem as painlessly as possible.

I don't want to make you feel worse but as luck would have it I'm only just back from an extra long weekend. I'd been most dubious about the weather forecaast and on Friday it was quite wet but we got to Loch Aline after a medium late start. Saturday started grey but quickly brightened up. Checked out the new paint job on the Mishnish. Then on up to the head of Loch Sunart Saturday night. Sunday was a stonking sail from Salen (motored the first bit) all the way back down the Sound of Mull and into Loch Don at low water neaps with only slight excitability at one part of the route. I have a set of waypoints for that bit. Monday into Dunstaffnage for fuel and water and a chat before going up to Port Appin for a magnificent sunset - they've now got 5 moorings outside the Pierhouse. Back to Creran Tuesday morning.
But no more boating for me till June.

Interested to hear about your night (I presume) in Loch Don. I've never been in and have let the pilot dissuade me with all that "..there are no marks.." and "..the best you can do is feel your way in on a rising tide.."

Must try to be more adventurous.
