Don't know if anyone on here is an animal welfare supporter, but as a member of the Chicken Out campaign I just thought you might like to know that the recent programme, showing the way chickens were treated in intensive farming, seems to be having some success. More details here
http://www.rivercottage.net/redir.asp?c ... =130317&u= about the next stage. Worth joining in if you're into that sort of thing, and no, you don't end up with loads of spam e.mails. I get about one per week and that is to update, not to try and sell me rubbish.

Watched all the programs - did know what actually went on - but watched anyway.
Result of the series seems to have been a huge hike in the prices of free range chickens in the Almighty Tesco.
Wish we had room to grow our own.

The price at our butchers has gone down, while the quality is just as good. Tesco and the others forced farmers into intensive breeding in the first place and now they're trying to cash in on the low supply of well looked after chickens, while still paying crap prices to the farmers. Don't buy from supermarkets and they will take the hint eventually. However, if you do have room, there's a load of birds looking for new homes thanks to people reacting with their wallet. Take on some and feed them up, at least you'll know how they've been treated.
