Noticed on the website for the race this year that there is a requirement for ISAF offshore personal survival training certificate to be undertaken by at least 30% of crew including the skipper. Good idea or just more beurocracy? Has anyone done the course?

Found this INFO but no costs. If they are running a course in Banff, and the cost isn't too horrendous, then the qualification must be an advantage to you in any quest for a berth on a race.

I suspect this won't be too much of a problem for many NE boats as lots of the crews will have worked offshore and so done a sea survival course. If it is the same requirement as for a commercial endorsement of a YM then it is non-expiring - you merely need to be able to prove you did it at some point.

it seems to be more than the requirement for ym comm. that requires rya basic sea survival + medical. the link provided by ash reveals a two day course, the first day of which comprises the rya basic survival course.
can`t say i`ve seen anyone advertising that specific course.
if one had an rya basic survival cert - could one just do day 2 of the course ? ( hrh can reply but need not take the piss from one )

Cumbrae water sports centre are charging £205 for the 2 day course - quite expensive, but what price to save your life etc.

I have just put my name down as crew so I guess I will have to do the course.

does that price include accommodation for the night and/or the ferry fare from largs ?

It includes saturday night accomodation but not sure about the ferry fares.

The offshore course is three days or five days if you do the Norwegian sector version (I've done both more than once, though not recently). It used to include a really good abandonment scenario in the environmental tank with 1m waves, but I gather from my son who did it recently that it is a flat water experience these days - which is a shame.

Like you, I haven't done the offshore course for a few years now. It used to be fun in the "environmental" pool with the wave machine and fans going while the instructors sprayed a few fire hoses about. Even the helicopter dunker was a bit tame the last time I did it.

Glad all that faffing about is behind me!
