BLUEMOMENT

The most recent edition of the RYA mag (which was, once again, deficient in the number of pictures of HRH aka claysies bit of stuff - there were none) had an article from some RYA lickspittle noting that another RYA yachtmaster had run aground, sunk etc etc. It so happens that I am about to venture on a cruise where there are quite a few YMs onboard.

Now it could be that the imprimatur of this august qualification might engender an aura of invulnerability upon the holder(s) which should be a caution?

I went on one of them share a boat thingumys in Greece and one of the blerks on it was a retired YM instructor.

He might well have forgotten more than I knew, but I'm certain it's not good practice to cast off with the crew ashore and the engine not even started never mind warmed up. So yep there could be somat in what you say WRT a feeling of invincibility through having a bit of paper to say you can do it.

It is a worry. Complacency is certainly the antithesis of good seamanship - and yer nane o' yes gettin' ony younger.

Well are we going to have a relaxing weekend or are we all going to be worrying about sinking, drowning and doom!

There will be enough dazed skippers to keep the YM's on the right track.

Well, if previous experience is anything to go by, having 5 YMs on one boat ensures at least four attempts to get anchor set to everyone's satisfaction. There is nothing wrong with this. It gives a solid sense of security to the boat with the surfeit of YMs. It is also a great source of pleasure for others who aspire to being smug gits.

But hows about this for a new angle. If all they plonkers - and obviously not a yakmeister between them - hed thocht tae park their damned boats in somethin like an orderly fashion, wi due consideration fer thos ariving later due to a desire to abloot in Kerrera - there wid have been room aplenty. Onyways - I had a suspicion that the motor on the Lofrans was just sticking a little and having consulted, we decided that 3 or 4 ups and downs was probably the best way of clearing it.

Fromour side of the anchor chain - we derived enormous pleasure watching the faces of the hithertoforementioned tosspots as they thought we were gettig a little close.
