When motoring in a confined spot (less than say 30 seconds from somewhere you really don't want to be) it's seamanlike to have the main up in case of a sudden loss of mechanical propulsion.

so it can overcome any benficial effect the engine produces.

I think its better just to go gently, and always use your mirrors and indicators in such situations.
