Has anyone got any idea why the 60 metre long crane vessel Lara 1 is currently heading for the Shiant Isles, having come from Gourock via Oban? Is there anything heavy around there that needs lifting?

She is supposed to be carrying the old Calmac linkspan for disposal.

Lara 1 having circumnavigated Skye is currently anchored in Loch Ceann Traigh (Kentra) on the north side of Ardnamurchan, allegedly heading for Glenarm in Northern Ireland.

It looks like the linkspan is still on board. All very serendipitous.

It’s in Oban Bay now. Wondered what it was as I drove past.

Thanks for that. So there was something heavy at the Shiants that needed lifting ...

Watched this one unfold with some alarm. That landing craft is a couple of lochs over from my own mooring. Not ideal to have an unlit, unmanned boat drifting around the area.
I saw the dive video from before they lifted it, very odd looking inside the wheelhouse and seeing lifejackets pinned to the ceiling. I don't know what the prognosis is for the boat, from above it looked fine, bit of a bash at the stern, but something clearly made it sink.
I actually sailed quite close past the Shiants the day after it was located, but before the recovery teams got there. I didn't see anything, but then again it was just a VHF aerial sticking up so if I had seen it I would have been a bit worried.
