The mention of mermaids and thinking Cuan in a kind of roundabout way, it struck me that 'Lorelei' might be a good name for a boat that had a habit of sitting on rocks.

I think all local clubs especially should do everythig possible to ensure the proposal to put a low bridge or causeway accross the Sound never gets off the ground.

Local lobbying group LEAF (Lorn Environmental Action Forum) have come out firmly against the idea of a solid causeway across Cuan as the worst of all possible options. There is an excellent article HERE which includes a report of the meeting on the 17th Feb in Oban.

(And for those of you interested in goings on in Argyll I cannot recommend ForArgyll.com too highly - a very informative site that would seem to be cast in the mould of the West Highland Free Press)

He He, can I revive an old thread cos I've now been through Cuan. I shouldn't be too cocky as I have still to get back.

There are many,many more that have experience of that wee Rock....

We transit the Cuan about 10 times each year but if there are strong winds SW round to SE the anchorage right down in the elbow near the passage through to Ardinamir is excellent and not difficult to enter especially if you have Antares Charts.

I've sailed with someone who's had afternoon tea sitting on the rock? Does that count?

Yes - but just watch out when you're anchoring. Last year we anchored there (which we'd done a few times before) and picked up something nasty on the bottom. When we eventually got the anchor up, having tripped the windlass a few times, we found a string of abandoned pots on the tip of the Rocna. The only thing I could do was to attack the nylon line with a bread knife as we couldn't get the up any further. They're just east of the channel to Ardinamir.
