I should have added that we were at Big Dorus early but we went left into the bay, picked up the back eddy and then ferry glided out close by the point. Alastair from Croabh showed me that one a few years ago. Took me back to my PBK days!

engine on will immediately reduce the strain on sails and would be fun! Then prolly some rolling hitch thing to have a go at the sail, jimi said he'll go up and do it. OR possibly fling up the spi and go surfing?

Sounds bum-clenching for anyone other than an 18year old deck gorilla, even in the comparative safety of a Claymore foredeck.
I assume the reefline went onto the drum loosely when the sail was set and then somehow got riding turns inside when tension was applied to calm the monster.
What make of drum is it I wonder. Ours is a Bamar and so far has not punished us for treating it in a similar fashion.
Also, at the risk of sounding stupid, could "Pladda" really "Fladda" up the Sound of Luing? (according to my Cmap)
I'm looking at (another?)Pladda as I type, I'm sure the passage plan didn't include Arran!

At 6.5 to 7 knots in 30kts of wind would the engine increase boat speed and therefore reduce strain on the sails?

If you can fabricate a bracket on the back before your next tangle, an 1100hp boost from a pair of these might help to reduce the apparent wind a bit.
