You'll not be staying at Kames either? The cheek of them, 15 moorings. Bog off the lot of you. Go and enjoy Oban McDonalds as that'll be all that's left the way yer talking.
Marisca has mentioned Tobermpry and that is a place where anchoring has been rendered well-nigh impossible near the town by all the moorings. As to the original question, you may lay an anchor in a position where you are clear of any boat that takes up the mooring and clear of any boat that anchored in the position of the mooring. But then if the wind changes, due to the greater swinging room required, you could end up foul of a moored boat whereas an anchored boat wauld have swung clear as well.
I do not have an answer to all this. I am glad to use visitors' moorings in many places as I like the peace of mind that the payment of a modest fee gives. I am happy to pay such a fee for the service rendered and in recognition that I may contribute little else to the local economy as with only two on board, both moderate drinkers, our stores bill never amounts to much. Like Marisca however, I consider that the term "modest" extends to only £10 per night and I would really rather only pay £5 or patronise the local restaurant or pub providing the facility. On suce occasions I may even throw caution to the winds and have a second pint (or glass of wine.)
