I struggled through it too, but found I couldn't relate to a lot of the questions. Thanks for letting us know about it - will our numbers be sufficient to influence the results?

It's surprising that the RYA seems largely irrelevant for cruising folk; I value the training I've received (day skipper, coastal skipper, radar, VHF courses) but then I don't have anything else to compare it with.

I get the impression that my sort of sailing could carry on quite nicely without the RYA. Folks that are interested will take it up no matter what the RYA do or don't do.

The training is usefull but I don't want to pretend it's essential or we could end up with compulsory training, licensing and (even more) -ve cash flow.

Q16 was the absolute nadir of a very poorly framed set of questions. I didn't understand it either and I do questions (among other things) for a living.

Well I filled out the form - agree with others that it's pretty cr@ppy.

A really subtle trick noticed when reading what the corporate bullsh!t "strands" meant was that the order of the answers was different to the order of the descriptions.

This was after trying to work out how 4 departments each dealing with one "strand" could produce 6 "strands".

So, is there another organisation worthy of our subscription contributions? CCC?

Or do we, as the apparently unrewarded donors, simply carry on funding the Southern racers?

Seems reminiscent of the way the gentlefolk south of the border view our (Wee Eck's) devolution discussions -everybody just go their own selfish way, or ponder that there may be merit in the status quo?

I think their approach is clear from the first substantive questions, where they conflate keelboat and yacht sailing. I think Etchells, Loch Longs and Flying Fifteens look gorgeous and I'd happily have a go in one, but they really are completely different from yachts.

Otherwise the survey is complete mince. They give no indication of whether responses are to be based on what the RYA does or on what we would like it to do. Seems clear to me that they wrote t in order to get the go ahead to go on promoting racing and telling everyone else what to do.

I've been tempted by the Cruising Association but (a) it's blinking expensive and (b) although I gather that a gentlemen's agreement with the CCC that the CA would not organise north of the border is no more, I don't think they do much if anything up here.

I've wondered about joining the CCC (actually rejoining, after a gap of 20+ years) but again I am not quite sure what I'd get for my money, absent an Oppiebrat wishing to play at Bardowie.
