Steaming

Post by Alan_D »

Should I relabel the switch that says "steaming light" to "power-driven vessel light"?

Talking of steam, what is the steam exiting at the bow near the waterline for?

Anybody know?

I know this will sound facetious - its an exhaust outlet

Perhaps something to do with the fo'csle machinery?

Failing that´- Para was bunked there in his smoking days.

I seem to remember that crossing ahead of SS Shieldhall was much preferable to passing astern when she was off Garroch Head.

Surely that would be dependant on wind direction - or did she only ever travel upwind????

It looks like she has just won her starboard anchor so probably exhaust from the capstan.

In my day, exhaust steam went back to the condenser and then to the hotwell to be pumped back to the boiler to be made into steam again.

But perhaps they were "flush" with fresh water and didn't need a condenser!

I feel that is an original question and as such, with some refinement and development, could attract research funding leading, possibly, to acceptance to undertake a Phd. The University of Lancaster would, I am sure be interested and I would be happy to act as your supervisor as you refine your question and outline your research methodology.

We could discuss fees at a later date........
I think Marisca is already half committed to bringing his project to The University of Edinburgh where we can smooth his path to a PhD, unlike Lancaster which evidently offers an inferior degree, the Lancaster Phd.

It all depends on the available funding. The AHRC don't seem to be offering anything and there is doubt about the "humanity" aspect anyway. The EPSRC are more likely with the computing aspects. The MRC may turn up trumps if the research is into adverse psychological and personality changes caused by prolonged exposure to internet fora.

My preference is for Edinburgh - there are more Engerlander yahs there than at Lancaster.

Just trying to see where Edinburgh sits in the order of UK Universities..........
Ah yes - down there at 12. Lancaster seems to be a few places further up - still, probably just some meaningless statistic.

OK I look forward to seeing your application. You should know that we expect cringing obsequiousness (or however you spell that) from our supervisees. Should be no problem for you ;-)
