In my day, exhaust steam went back to the condenser and then to the hotwell to be pumped back to the boiler to be made into steam again.

But perhaps they were "flush" with fresh water and didn't need a condenser!

I feel that is an original question and as such, with some refinement and development, could attract research funding leading, possibly, to acceptance to undertake a Phd. The University of Lancaster would, I am sure be interested and I would be happy to act as your supervisor as you refine your question and outline your research methodology.

We could discuss fees at a later date........

I think Marisca is already half committed to bringing his project to The University of Edinburgh where we can smooth his path to a PhD, unlike Lancaster which evidently offers an inferior degree, the Lancaster Phd.

It all depends on the available funding. The AHRC don't seem to be offering anything and there is doubt about the "humanity" aspect anyway. The EPSRC are more likely with the computing aspects. The MRC may turn up trumps if the research is into adverse psychological and personality changes caused by prolonged exposure to internet fora.

My preference is for Edinburgh - there are more Engerlander yahs there than at Lancaster.
