I think the main interest for any future debate is the actual number of transits per year.

I reckon during the season June - August there are at least 40 boats a day on average.

Well one of the never votes was from me - because I've never been through. Thinking back to last season and why this might be, I was only on a passage that might have made it an option on 2 occasions. Once I went south out of Craobh to meet a friend's boat coming from Ardfern so we could sail in company to Oban. Didn't seem much point taking the inland route that day.

The second time was heading home from WHYW. But visibility was crap, it was chucking it down, the crew were keeping warm down below and I didn't fancy my first attempt being with limited enthusiasm from others.

I'm sure we'll be through a few times this year.

i wonder where this thread is going. we now have a poll showing ( at best ) about 105 transits per annum and a dead reckoning of about 3600 transits in three months.
something there for both sides of the waterway perhaps

Hi, been in New York for a while so catching up.
Strikes me that if the transit figures are going to be any good as representation at an enquiry or planning meeting then they need to be accurate and reliable eg 40 a day in summer makes it sound as those your waters are as crowded as round here! Is that believable.
There is a way to get accurate, trustworthy and reliable figures for transits through your Sound and that is to contact Clyde Coastguard and ask them. I'll gladly do that for you if you want.
Still catching up; I've continued to dig around re advertising revenue and have some quiet good news which I'll post later when I have a little more time.

How on earth would Clyde Coastguard know anything about it? Not many yachts in this area regularly make routine traffic reports.

Couldn't agree more, excellent suggestion. Nick's just a bit put out because he didn't think of it first.

Not sure why the CG would know - I never told him, and a lot of folks give 'destination - from' info rather than 'via'.
Anyone asked the locals? Maybe somebody keeps a book like the late lady at Ardinamir .
