I don't think this is too far away from the topic of pubs and free use of the heads but..
My ship was lying in Princes Dock and having reached the giddy heights of Junior Ordinary Seaman from Deck boy I ventured into Betty's Bar.
There had been "trouble" before I arrived but peace had returned, and I sat by the door when the "Trouble" returned.. a large lady,' a working girl' who was rat-arsed and worryingly, waving one of the metal stakes that are used to support the safety tape at road works. I sat like a terror stricken rabbit, while said lady attacked the juke box in it's customary wire cage which was bolted to the wall. Luckily the curly bit at the top of the stake got caught in the wire mesh and delayed the wild swings long enough for Betty to come from behind the bar,grab the stake wielder and head-butt her into submission...I slipped quietly out of the bar...
After that I was a regular at the up-town coffee bars...(about 1964!!)

Ah, that would have been Big Aggie, she'd fallen out with her Martian boyfriend the week before... seriously , last time I was there it was quiet and a bit boring, but we were - sort of - alert...
As for the local yoofs in the coffee bars - they didn't throw sugar lumps at you did they? could get very serious.

Nothing to do with accents as such, but lisps and saggy wrists were mercilessly bombarded in the place that began with a "K" Not that I'm suggesting anything other than you may have got caught in the crossfire.

Saggy wrists were reserved for ships stewards.
(Re: bars and heads) That dancehall..the Lacarno or similar in Sauchiehall St: or Renfrew St:? can't remember too long ago they even had a 'bouncer' at the door to the heads in there..

Should you have ventured south of the Border in a time called 'The 80's', Preston Dock had an establishment called 'The Manxman', a floating nightclub based in the old Manx Packet Steamer.
Us gels from the local Girl's Grammar School would sneak out at weekends and turn our lacrosse shin pads into shoulder pads. We'd dance the night away - with each other of course as the bouncers would never allow any blokes up the gang plank.
Happy days, especially when pulling the bodies out of the dock a couple of days later.
