Re: Restart Scottish Sailing Consultation
If you are "sure" you have had it, why do you need a test to confirm? And you would need a test that does not yet exist. Look, I'm content that just about everyone on here is in the habit of making considered, risk-based decisions (maybe that's actually what stay alert is meant to mean, I don't know) and come to the right conclusions, but no way do I want the general picture to be that its up to individuals to decide what is and is not a "safe" activity. If we sailors are kept ashore because we are caught by wider measures that prevent genuinely risky activity by others because the gov has a single, simple message I'm happy with that. Although I think we no longer have that message despite 3 of the 4 nations tying to keep it that way.

Re: Restart Scottish Sailing Consultation
Whether or not we are allowed to visit, work on and use our boats, the yards and contractors should be allowed to re-start work. The rural economy is being hit hard and anything that can protect and preserve employment should be encouraged. It will be more straightforward to have safe, self-isolating procedures for contractors in boat yards etc than in factories and offices.
The elected numpties who are trying to run the country and their pals in the media, are not showing the measures that were put in place in Asia to allow the controlled re-start of the economy there. Compulsory tracking (in China, using the WeChat platform), compulsory use of that app and temperature checking, compulsory use of masks in all public places (includign outside) logging the details of every entrant to work premises on a daily basis and very high standards of sanitation/disinfecting etc etc were all part of the return to work program. Daily checking by local govt officials (and there are may of them) and instant shut down if a business is found to be breaking the rules.
We are totally unprepared and lacking in the collective discipline that is a common thread in the countries that have this under control
We can be derogatory about the Asian countries, their lack of civil liberty and all the differences vs ourselves, but to reduce viral infection, it works.
Do I believe their data? No..... but they've got this managed down to an level that balances infection and economic activity

RYA Scotland, as expected, supports the Scottish Government's view point. Email from RYA Scotland:-
Friends,
The announcement from the First Minister over the weekend has been very clear and the message for Scotland is still the same; Stay at home.
For now, lockdown continues in Scotland and boating in Scotland must wait a bit longer. We must continue to stay off the water to support the effort to contain the spread of the Coronavirus and protect the capacity of the NHS and our frontline emergency services.
While the situation is now different in England, we remain committed to the principles that will guide our work with partners in Scotland to be ready for a return to boating in Scotland when the time is right.
In essence these are;
1. We will always follow Government guidance
2. We will, as a boating community, take a considerate and conservative approach
· Considerate of others
· Conservative of risk
The detail of these principles is on our website (Principles) and I would encourage you to read them.
Colleagues based in Hamble are working hard to produce guidelines for Clubs and Training Centres to support the return to boating in England. In time, we will undoubtedly benefit from this work as we return to boating in Scotland. For now I would encourage clubs and training centres to continue to prepare plans for a return to activity that considers how your club or centre will accommodate social distancing measures, the likelihood of operating as household units and the need for increased safe practices around hygiene.
RYA Scotland will continue to work with our broad range of partners to be ready to return to the water at the earliest opportunity, when it is safe and responsible to do so.
Thank you for your patience and support during these difficult and challenging times. While we must all continue to stay off the water, the water and the wind will still be there and we all look forward to a time when we can get back afloat.
James Allan
Chief Executive Officer
RYA Scotland

Next Gate to pass through is up ahead, on the 28th of May. Let's see if this outdoor sports activity translates into sailing and out door work relaxing translates into boat launching. I hope so, but for the avoidance of being flamed, I hope so if the science dictates that.

I would think/hope that sailing(family groups only , return to home port,no overnighting especially to the islands)surfing, fish murdering, gowlf etc will be permitted.BlowingOldBoots wrote:Next Gate to pass through is up ahead, on the 28th of May. Maybe they will start to launch boats that have a beam of more than 2 meters...

Re: Restart Scottish Sailing Consultation
I took a wee gander at some of the submissions to the consultation (the original topic of this thread). Not all of them are a paragon of balanced reporting. Seems cruisers never need local facilities because they don't need to go ashore (for food, dispose of rubbish, do laundry) can always find somewhere safe to anchor (irrespective of how windy it gets), never need to go alongside (e.g. replenish fresh water, or pick up diesel). Perhaps the respondents all have 60+ foot boats with watermakers, massive diesel tanks, fridge-freezers, plus wind/solar/hyrovane powering it all etc. Or maybe they submitted on a rose tinted, best of all worlds "this is how I like to think sailing is" and ignore the actual practicalities. And that's before we consider anyone needing medical help (jammed finger in a winch), or hit the red button when dragging anchor (remember Lochaline a few years ago), or even running aground (I'm not mentioning Cleit Rock in particular). I'm fine with the idea of gentle lobbying, as long as its done on a balanced and truthful basis, and i also recognise some sailors are extremely self-reliant, these biased submissions (whether intentional or not) do not help decision makers come to a rational decision, and may actually delay rather than accelerate the return of proper sailing including overnight stays.

Just to clarify, I am fairly sure I had Covid-19 whilst skiing in northern Italy in late feb. The symptoms weren't the usual ( I was extremely fatigued, elevated, but not high temp and mild dizziness & nausea for 2 days). So I would like a test, if only to confirm that I did have it, and got over it OK . The antibody test does now exist, and is available in the UK. I am not about to go stravaiging, but when the lockdown eases, and I have had a test, I will feel a bit happier about getting out and about.Burst Boiler wrote:If you are "sure" you have had it, why do you need a test to confirm? ‘Coarse Fishing’ I think is the term used for catching fish you don’t eat.. I used to watch those sados sitting on the Loch side catching roach, perch and other tiddlers and putting them all in a net in the shallows. Then when they finished they’d empty the net back in the Loch. Some of the fish would be alive and swim off. Some would float away belly up.BlowingOldBoots wrote:Why murdering Wully? I got talking to one of them once (once was enough) He said the challenge was in outsmarting the fish so you could catch them. Given that the IQ of a fish is about .5 on a good day it didn’t say a lot for the brain power of your average angler...
To add to my jaundiced view if yer average fish murderer the ones I worked with were on average the laziest gits about..think about it - if your hobby it sitting on yer hoop all day staring at a rod hoping it will twitch you aren’t going to be a very dynamic person.

From the Road Map
https://www.gov.scot/publications/coron ... ut-crisis/

The second link is the download link from the first link, it has taken quite a few attempts as I guess the system has excess demand to download.
From Phase 1 of Lockdown Relaxing, likely from next Thursday, 28th of May.

It is difficult to make an interpretation regarding sailing, but the document also indicates that local travel is still in force. Hence, if you are local to your yacht, maybe, if you are further away, probably not. Access to marinas will depend on the marina having in place controls for outdoor working.Sport, culture and leisure activities: In this phase we are planning to allow unrestricted outdoors exercise adhering to distancing measures and non-contact outdoor activities in the local area –such as golf, hiking, canoeing, outdoor swimming, angling – consistent with the wider rules and guidance applicable to any activity in this phase.
From the Appendix, more clarity, around Phase 1 travel.Working or running a business: In this phase we are planning for remote working to remain the default position for those who can. For those workplaces that are reopening, employers should encourage staggered start times and flexible working. We are also planning for outdoor workplaces to
resume with physical distancing measures in place once guidance is agreed. We are also planning for the construction sector to implement the first two phases in its restart plan with a decision to move to ‘phase 2’ of the construction sector’s plan only after consulting with government to ensure it is safe to do so in line with public health advice. We are preparing for the safe reopening of the
housing market. Workplaces resuming in the following phases can undertake preparatory work on physical distancing and hygiene measures in this phase.
It is not until Phase 3 that we can travel beyond our local area. The Phase 3 criteria allows a lot of stuff to open, museums etc, hence as I interpret it, from my perspective, I wont be able to travel to my boat for quite some time. In my case I also need the Harbour that is the Gare Loch to be opened by the Royal Navy, as it is closed to all leisure boats.Permitted to travel short distances for outdoor leisure and exercise but advice to stay within a short distance of your local community (broadly within 5 miles) and travel by walk, wheel and cycle where possible.

Re: Restart Scottish Sailing Consultation
I've been pretty good - started maintaining distance back in March before lock-down started, have been out on my bike the days I haven't had a walk with my wife until Nicola said I could do both - mind you, I didn't know 5 miles was the limit - cut grocery shopping to every 10 days, and otherwise have cut the grass too often, helped with the creation of a rockery and stayed at home like what I was told. Now it looks as if the boat, anti-fouled before lock-down and early in the queue for launching can hit the water but unlike the sailors of Brexitland I'm not supposed to drive much more than 5 miles from home. My risk balancing node says that me sitting alone in a car for an hour on the motorway is just as safe for the population as crawling along for 5 miles. I only want to go to the boat, not go shopping, eating, drinking, socialising, just me (and possibly my wife if it's a nice day) and my boat.
I can guarantee the worthy Ed'burg members of Muirfield will not let Nicola's words stop them from spoiling a good walk round Gullane, so why do I feel so guilty with my thoughts?

Might you take some comfort from this post in TOP?
Re the travel thing. This is the BBC's interpretation of it:
In addition, people will be able to travel - preferably by walking or cycling - for recreation, although they will be asked to remain "where possible" within or close to their own local area.

"Golf, canoeing, hiking, outdoor swimming, angling" all within 5 miles of home!!!!!! Who, the hell, are the demographic they're aiming at? Hiking is defined as "the activity of going for long walks, especially across country" - needs to be modified to include going round in circles!
Maybe today there will be a clarification.

Re: Restart Scottish Sailing Consultation
Hard to take comfort from people being deliberately thick on TOP. Unless they really are that thick, which is always possible. All this "if I was stopped by the police I would just say such and such". For goodness sake, you are being requested (not compelled) to behave in a certain way for the greater good. Its an appeal to your personal sense of civic responsibility. The old saying that rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men cuts both ways - the fools on TOP really should just obey the rules since they clearly lack the wisdom to use them as guidance. I'm getting increasingly cheesed off with the infantile comments on there.
