WEEKEND WEATHER FORECAST
Issued: 1200 Thursday 20th March 2008
GOOD FRIDAY:
Low pressure centred over Denmark by midday on Friday brings a cold and unstable airflow from a northerly quarter. An occluded front moving south into Scotland will tuhen push south through the rest of the country during Friday afternoon and evening.
Plenty of cloud around throughout the day with periods of rain. Most of the rain will be through eastern England in the morning. As the occlusion moves into Scotland more persistent precipitation will ensue, turning to snow through Scotland.
The afternoon sees it staying windy and cold with outbreaks of rain and increasingly sleet and possible snow for many of us. The heaviest and most persistent of this around eastern coasts.
Winds will be NW 20-28kt (F6) in the south, gusting to 35-40kt (F8) as the occluded front comes south. NE 28-35kt (F7-F8) behind the front with gusts to 45kt (F9-F10).
SATURDAY:
A strong northerly flow covers the whole of the country on Saturday. High pressure is to the west and low pressure to the east. Troughs of showers may move southwards with the flow, the cold front indicating a more organised area of showers on Saturday afternoon. Note the set of fronts northwest of Scotland, these will move quickly south on Saturday night, bringing the threat of snow into Easter Sunday morning.
A cold day with sunshine and wintry showers, although sunny spells in between. Most of the showers aligned through northeast England, the Midlands, east Anglia and southeast England.
More persistent snow could affect parts of north and west Scotland later.
Winds N 20-25kt (F5-F6) but 25-35kt (F7-F8) for a time over southeast England.
SUNDAY:
An area of more persistent snow could be associated with the fronts moving south on Sunday, those fronts in the Channel by midday. A cold front approaches northern Scotland later, enhancing the showers once again.
There is the potential for a wintry start to the day on Sunday as the fronts clear southwards. Once gone the cloud should break to leave a cold day with a few bright or sunny spells. Thicker cloud over southwest Ireland and southwest England producing some rain.
Showers could affect eastern coasts, a few of them heavy at times.
Winds N-NW 10-15kt (F30F4) but NW 20-25kt (F5-F6) in the southwest at first.
