Shard can you double check the price of A5 cod? - It seems one or two pence too high to me.

Ah, the fish market report - used to often hear it on the wireless, a bit like the shipping forecast but with a less understandable litany of names. There would appear to have been changes, though: no mention of Sole or Coley (sp?), but we now have Lems and Lythe whatever they are (not that I'd recognise most of them even if I fell over them...)

Anyone know what grade of cod & haddock goes to the chip shops?

From what I've seen I think anything they catch that's battered goes to the chippy regardless of grade.

You should have watched the Trawlermen TV Series.

Lems = Lemon Sole?
Lythe = Pollack?

You are showing your age matey :) I remember a geezer with a Morayshire accent reading prices 'all per stone' for some species while others were priced by the cran which I believe is (was) a big roond basket. This would have been the Scottish Home Service......

Haven't tuned in for a while, but I think herring was by the cran. Anything much been happening in the McFlannels lately?

I believe you are right about the herring. As posibly the only person anywhere with Parker & McColl's 'Singing the Fishing' on my iPod I probably should have known that. As to the McFlannels I had forgotten all about them. Thankyou so much for reminding me of them.

Far as I remember, they were Willie Joss, Mollie Weir, and a bunch whose names probably include those who became quite well known later on.

Don't get the wrong idea though, I was just a wean. Auntie Kathleen Garscadden and stuff. On Saturday there was Uncle Mac, who even played one of my Children's Favourites....

Gosh, that brings back memories. The battery in the wireless we had at the time was somewhat larger than your average house brick and twice as heavy. Even so, it was still described as "portable".

Happy days.

I'm seeing Peggy Seeger perform in Fareham this weekend - the only reason I'd heard of her was this post. So thanks. (Unless it's rubbish!)

I have heard she is remarkable for an 80 year old, still singing. Enjoy.
