Best internet protection

Post by Silkie »

I've just uninstalled AVG 8 since the latest update introduced some kind of browser conflict resulting in avgsxn.exe continually reporting that it had encoutered a problem and although it was very sorry, it would have to close. Apparently the fix is to re-install without the linkguard but I felt it was getting a bit bloated anyway and am wondering if there are now better free alternatives.

Any ideas?

.
We have AVG8.5 running fine with XPSP2 and Vista.

You could try Avast - I don't like its user interface, but a lot of people do.

Hello,
I have avast installed for about two years on my computer, XPSP3, I never had problem with AVAST.
I am on the web from 10 am till 12 PM.
It seems to be good ... for a free product.

I've just swapped from Avast to AVG (don't know what version) at home, running XP SP3. I found that Avast stopped the machine (it's a bit elderly) for about 10 minutes at switch-on while it loaded its latest database and checked everything out. AVG seems to be better and hasn't had conflict trouble yet. I suppose the answer is to spend money on a modern computer.
What's the latest feeling about Vista?

I've had no problems with Vista but . . .

You need a good graphics card and 4Gb RAM to get the best out of it. (It won't see the full 4GB, but it will usually see more than 3 - mine sees 3.5GB)

And there are a few tweaks which help. I've disabled user account control and the indexing function, which cuts out most of the annoyances.
