I just made my first post in TOP on a thread about col regs and someone tried to shoot me down in flames, is everyone treated the same or do pedants just pick on new folk to prevent "their" forum getting contaminated?

If anyone is interested the bylaws on Windermere, and Loch Lomond, are a straight lift of the col regs with bits added about speed limits and similar tweaks.

I've had a look, and I wasn't able to locate the abuse or 'flaming'. It rather seems that several peeps made several quite moderate responses to the question asked. Maybe I've missed something important.....
Oh, and BTW, the one 'TOP Registered User' ( Carvel ) keeps his boat, apparently, in the Solent - while the other one here ( Aquaplane ) keeps his in Loch Lomond. Confusing, or what?
Split personality.....?

Bilbo, I'm Aquaplane in both places, that don't rule out a split personality though.
I didn't start the thread, I just posted on it. Perhaps I'm looking for sarcasm/pedantry where it isn't. A gentleman "hated to point out" that the col regs apply to the sea after I applied them to Windermere traffic. IMO he took great delight in pointing it out, but I could be wrong.

I suspect that many on 'ere will be sympathetic - and a little more gentle - with your sensitivities, than perhaps elsewhere. This lot are, if one believes the publicity, a far more civilised community.
You were perhaps not to know that, by entering any thread on ColRegs with 'an opinion', you had acted akin to the Russian invasion of Georgia! in TOP, there are several topics which are guaranteed to bring out the foaming-mouthed loonies - and that's one of them!
Another is 'anchor comparisons', and yet another is 'mobos' - but that's probably fairy nuff. There's a natural limit to inclusiveness and PC......
Do enjoy your stay!

That was just a very gentle singeing! The pendants pick on anybody, new or old.aquaplane wrote:I just made my first post in TOP on a thread about col regs and someone tried to shoot me down in flames, is everyone treated the same or do pedants just pick on new folk to prevent "their" forum getting contaminated?
I've just put myself into the firing line too.
If you want to read some spats, then find some of Nicks Posts and see some the replies that he invokes!!!

I think you have to develop a thick hide to inhabit that particular tank, too many piranhas (It only takes a few dedicated ones to make the water dangerous).aquaplane wrote:I just made my first post in TOP on a thread about col regs and someone tried to shoot me down in flames, is everyone treated the same or do pedants just pick on new folk to prevent "their" forum getting contaminated?
I rarely post there unless I am in a position to offer something (I consider) useful. (I'm not inferring YOUR post wan't useful!)
Lifes too short to discuss in depth and with venom'd pen the number of CQRs you can set on the head of a pin.
That notwithstanding, if you have a serious question - you can get some valid responses: I posted once asking for experiences sailing with a diabetic and was delighted with the genuine help that was offered. - for once the serial googlers and rooftop snipers stayed away.

I hold the view ( but am willing to be converted - by sword if need be ) that TOP has several identifiable 'groups' of users - if one can be stereotypic, for a mo.
There are some who use the facility as a means of keeping in touch when away somewhere else/foreign. Others use it to 'winge' and [rant] about something that exercises them, seeking sympathetic others. Yet more are trolls, conspiring and crafting ever more subtle 'come ons', and a sub-set is always keeping a guarded look-out for such. Others see the whole setup as 'froth and bubbles' not at all closely related to their boaty interests, and respond accordingly. Much of the opinion freely aired is about as much practical use as a chocolate teapot - except on here, of course! A benighted few take it all too seriously.....
Some forumeers seem to be odd, swirling cocktails of various proportions of the above - their responses to others' posts unpredictable and largely dependent on their daily medication. Yet others are all too predicable, and certain of the congregation periodically 'tweak their tails' to get them going. ( Ain't that so, Nick?
)
Just now and then, there's a post that's clearly the genuine and straightforward article, and most peeps spot this. There's usually a helpful reply or two, to such. Some users fail, however, to identify the innocent newbie, assume a 'windup' - and reply inappropriately.
Despite the apparent venom, it does meet a need/fulfil a function. Quite what that is escapes me.....

Funny you should say that . . .
.

Just had a concerned PM from a nice man wanting to point out some flaws in my character. Apparently he was concerned that I didn't realise I was upsetting peopleYet others are all too predicable, and certain of the congregation periodically 'tweak their tails' to get them going. I'm not such a delicate flower that I let someone I don't know and who don't know me upset me. It wasn't untill I started using forums that I realised I sometimes show Trol tendancies just to make meself noticed, I have to be carefull.
I'm consistent though, I can be embarassing when out, pushing the boundaries especially after a beer or four.
I do apreciate folk who know lots but don't feel the need to ram it down folks throat to try to make themselves look good. Someone who feels the need to display their superior knowledge on a subject I generally have a hard time looking up to.
