Swinging / drying moorings in the North East of England

Hi. I'm wondering if anyone can help me with information on swinging moorings in the North East of England. I'm thinking of squanderingthe kids' inheritance on a catamaran and the chance of a (cheaper) swing mooring seems like a good idea, if I can find one. The only places i have found are the seas...

Re: East Coast Cruise

Hi all, Thanks for all the help and advice for the trip which went off swimmingly. My one gripe is that nobody warned me about the blazing hot tropical weather that you have up there. I can understand that you want to keep this a secret so that you don't get overrun with tourism and end up with a co...

Re: East Coast Cruise

Hi, Could I ask about some general advice about anchorages along the coast? Our ambitious timescales mean that we will probably need to slog up the coast, working the tides till the last minute and keeping going when winds allow us to overcome the tides. The early forecast is for a few periods of ca...

Re: East Coast Cruise

Lifting keel........Anstruther Anstruther would be on my list of places to visit (from the water) if we weren't planning on cutting the corner as much as possible. It is a bit of a 'Banff or Bust' trip. Pittenweem is another place that I have strolled around with thoughts of sailing in, one day. Ho...

Re: This time of the year

Clyde_Wanderer, what's the new career? Sounds like you have made a good change. I will need to pick up the career strings in a few years after my 'inadvisable adventure' and it is reassuring to hear that there is an alternative to chasing pigeons round the town square and swearing at passers by. Min...

Re: East Coast Cruise

Nick, Thanks for the further tips. It sounds like Stonehaven is the best jumping off point for the leg up to Peterhead. I've had a look at Collieston and it looks like a handy option - as you point out, conditions permitting. Although our boat can dry out with its stub keel sinking in mud, it is not...

Re: This time of the year

Unfortunately, this is not really a retirement for me. More like an open ended gap year that I have been promising myself for the last 15 years. The date has always been set as Easter 2014. 50th Birthday. Various bairns dispatched up chimneys and down mines. Plastic timepiece for long service from t...

East Coast Cruise

Hi all, I'm planning a cruise up from Hartlepool to Banff in early July to deliver our boat to her new owner. My inclination is to stay inshore in our lifting keel Seamaster Sailer 23. We have three or four days to do the trip and will probably sail round the clock up to Eyemouth / Dunbar so that we...

Re: This time of the year

" Grinding inexorably to the end of the end of my final full Academic Year. ..........Planning to retire at Easter ......" Either you are a teacher or you have the same career ambitions as my teenage sons! It's next Easter for me too! I'm not taking any chances with the weather, though. I ...

What went wrong?

We are still waiting for the report from the Marine Accident Investigation Board to know the official explanation. It seems unlikely that the fault was a weak cleat. One thought that has crossed my mind is that there was a change of course immediately before the incident. It has made me think about ...

Jura trip - A belated thanks and a salutory tale

Many thanks to all the kind people on the forum who provided excellent advice for our West Coast charter out of Craobh Haven earlier this year. We had decent weather, nice winds and a great trip all around. Thanks to all who gave helpful advice on the itinerary. The salutory tale? We had a fouled pr...

SW Coat Cruising

Well, off tomorrow with Windguru promising F4/5 North easterlies on the way down and F4/5 SouthEasterlies on the way back up to Craobh. We might have a short trip to Mull at the start - although nothing as ambitious as the Treshnish Islands on Ghillie's suggested route! I can't believe that there ar...
