Balvicar

Hi Nick, No - didn't spend the night - just popped in after coming through Cuan for croissants and a paper. Hadn't been to Balvicar for many years so I thought I'd take a refresher - lot of building going / gone on. Kathy kindly sent me your tel - but Orange is rubbish round here - and I thought if ...

Single handed berthing

Dave,

Its bound to go horribly wrong - because I even noticed that they have 2 different length pontoons at Oban - and made up one for either length.

That amount of preparation can't go unpunished ;-)

Thanks

Oh well - another time ...

I had breakfast yesterday next to this boat called "fair winds" ... Then pottered down to Loch Melfort - and ended up anchored there in a nice sheltered spot. Having looked at all the severe wind warnings - it looks as if the centre is going to pass almost directly over us (no wind at the ...

Returning to pontoons

Thanks Dave, I had the first half of that in mind - but hadn't thought of using the tail of the line back to the stern cleat to limit stern swinging out. Actually thought I might do the whole thing reversing in - depending on conditions etc - perhaps slightly harder to do - but bail out options are ...

Thanks - That was quick !

Actually Puilladobhran was looking like a possible for tomorrow night - so I might take you up on that.

We left Barra last Sun - so must almost have met over there.

Will try and steer well clear of the Barra ferry tomorrow then

I'll stick the VHF on 77 as well

Many Thanks
James

Kicking my heels in Oban

Well Kerrara in the marina at the moment. SWIMBO has had to go home for a few days (and has taken the 3yr old Admiral with her) I've caught up on all the work I needed to over the last couple of days - so was just wondering if any of you folk were round and about seeing as it seems to be home ground...

Beta custom mounts

I installed a Beta 28 a year ago. For a fairly small amount of money as I remember Beta make the mounts to fit your existing engine bed (mine was relacing an MD11c).

Certainly made that part of the installation easier - just bolted onto the existing bearers uisng same bolts

Good luck

Oban moorings

We picked one up for a night the other week - they look pretty substantial - though can't comment on the block.

Chap came round and left a card asking for £12 a night (we were ashore) - so I still need to post this to him when I get near a post box

Vodafone...

Well - I'm testing this on the W coast of Scotland at the moment - and I have to say that my Orange phone has been a waste of time in most places - don't even bother switching it on anymore ! Vodafone has been pretty good (though my experiences with their contracts dept is another tortuous story...)...

Slow runners ....

No - they reckon they might do it in 4 hrs if all goes well - reckon thats why I got such a strangled response when I said it would be really helpful if the could pick their feet up and do it in 1.5 hrs :D Mind you that was assuming decent boat speed upto that point - which I suspect was optimistic ...

Moving rocks

Thanks Steve,

I could easily have missed that - except the organisers emailed it out - so no excuses now

I gather last year was quite exciting - if brief - one of our runners (and the one who is to blame for all this) has taken part for the last couple of years

Thanks ...

Thanks Nick, Thats useful - just trying to work out what you might try and sail against - and what you might as well give up and anchor and wait for the tide. Obviously depends on the wind, but given that its a race passage planning goes out the window a bit - as to some extent you get there when yo...
