Eighteenth or Twenty-First Birthday ?

What are the cultural norms in Scotland, please, for celebrating a child's elevation to adulthood ? I know there's a legal 'stage' at 18, but do some parts of the country prefer to keep the old-fashioned 21st (possibly as a good reason for another party) ? A young colleague (scion of an old-fashione...

scary pome

I was doing some forensic textual work on emergency response plans (everyone should try this before breakfast), and came across this hair raising ode. Quite hard linguisticaly for us challenged Southerners, but horripilant , as the froggies say. MEG O' LYFF OR THE HAGS O' HURLY HAWKIN On Christmas E...

Re: Baked diesel

Sodde's Law dictates that if you paint the blob over, then the paint will discolour in time. Try using a very light solvent such as lighter fluid or white spirit to soak the blob before applying oleum ginglymus.

Re: Scotts at Largs

OK, so I have only spent a couple of years working in Scotland, and may be a little less than fully familiar with Caledonian cuisine, but I thought that Cullen Skink was made with mashed rather than unmashed spuddies ?

Or do real men only drink soup with lumps in it ?

a "turn" after dinner

devoid as I am of musical ability, talent, or even bravado, can anyone suggest what might be acceptable as a "turn" after dinner at an approaching private dinner in Scotland, please ? A recital of The Boy stood on the Burning Deck ? A selection of verses from Omar Kayham ? A monologue from...

Re: New to Cowes Week

Sunsail are a very well-known yacht charter company, for a variety of reasons. They have many proponents.

I am surprised that so close to the Week, you can find they have vessels still available for charter.

Re: Jings

It's not often you see a saily boat heavily disguised as a 1960's milk jug, is it ?

And I do like the digital readout of the depth meter projected onto the sail at the sharp end. Presumably, it's in hundredths of an ell ?

Re: distinguishing nav lights from shore lights

or if you are anti-phase they could stay on all the time, and be indistinguishable from DC lights. But no, if you blink very quickly at 50 Hz, DC lights will go on and off, so a light that is either on or off is a shore light, and a light that is on and off is a nav light. I'll stick to Colregs :D

distinguishing nav lights from shore lights

It seems that nav lights are DC, while other lights ashore are AC.

If, when looking through your binoculars, you make the objective lens describe a small circle, shore lights appear as a series of little dots, and proper nav lights as a continuous line.
