I have used a product called Gardener's Cream from a company called Martha Hill. Here is a link. http://www.beautynaturals.co.uk/product.asp?ref=MH-75S|MH-75T I can attest that it makes a very good lip & mouth protector in wet & windy weather. As a galley slave I put it on before I slip on ...

Service Station LED Torches and Headlamps (for yer head)

We bought four LED head lamp sets - the ones that take 3 AAA batteries - this past summer at the local Esso Garage. Think they were less than £3 each. With rechargeable AAA's we found these incredibly useful on our past winters cruise. The LEDS used so little power the AAA's did not need rechargi...

Yup. We've learned to live with a rapid turn to port when we activate the port electric winch........it's all magic to me.

Avoid parking tickets by leaving your windscreen wipers turned to 'fast wipe' whenever you leave your car parked illegally.
Sounds good but they are not easy to dissuade. Not sure I'd want to untangle the sticky tape / paper / wipers when I got back.

Almost There.............

Only 25 days until we stagger on board the big silver bird and get out to Swagman in Turkey - and the start of a 18 month cruise across the Med and then over to the Caribbean for Xmas. Where then? Who knows? I say stagger, as we've got so much new kit and junk to get to the boat I'm still not sure h...

Welcome

Hi Clueless (another name is better eh?), Welcome to the forum and I hope it provides the guidance you require. IMHO racings is a great way to start sailing as despite the hardships and embarrassment it may bring, it will get you out in all conditions and ultimately you'll have to learn to sail well...

The one he has is for the whole of the Balearics and not of Ireland!
Are you possibly interested in this one to swop - or is someone else happy to make up a three way exchange?

Qualifications

Hi Ram, I believe you only need proof of qualification for commercial reasons - ie some charter companies will not trust you with their boats unless you can show credentials - but an ICC is not required for all sailors doing offshore or coastal sailing. You will need the ICC Nick refers to if you pl...

Make your lead block easily adjustable...........

If you fit a line so you can haul the lead blocks forward when you need themt there, and ease off to allow them to move aft when you don't - then you can trim the sail properly on each angle of sailing.
That's surely the cheapest solution to the trimming issue?
Cheers

Downward Air Flow

I was always taught that all winds come at you in a angled but downward direction. Out of the sky if you like - as opposed to flowing along the water level. I was told this is why an rear inclined foresail is so efficient going to windward - and why it makes sense to let your mast go lean foreward w...

Hi James

I suspect you'll find most yotties like cleaning their own boats for some peverse reason. My wife finds it totally at odds when she askes for help at home. I've found Wessex Chemicals in Poole, Devon really good with cleaning products they sell both wholesale and retail. IMHO you'll find more work f...

Great Article in YM summer 2006

I rarely compliment articles in yachting mags but just got back home to read three YM's receipted whilst away - and was pleased to see an article where they tested shackles and swivels against differing chains. It was quite revealing - too much info to summarise here - but it has led me to review my...

Surely it depends on ..........

.........the style / design / construction?

I've not got confidence in those that look like two shackels swivelling on a big bolt, but I'm happy with the machined jobbies we've got from Osculati and used them on both our past 42 and current 46 footer.

Cheers
