He set off from his home port of St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands aboard his 35-foot boat Love Song, travelled with a small pocket of money, and managed to complete his circumnavigation a year and a half later with only 12 stops. He embraced the journey of sailing around the world (before GPS became readily available to civilians) by viewing his trip as an adventurous, challenging, learning experience. Since his return, he has been honoured by the Slocum Society and several other authoritative sailing organizations and publications.
