Quinto do Lorde marina, Madeira
Passage Notes

Situated near the Eastern tip of Madeira, Quinto do Lorde is a short day sail (32nm) from Porto Santo, or an option for your first landfall on Madeira.

The entrance faces West - round th end and turn hard to starboard between the breakwater and the cliffs. In a big onshore swell this entrance might be dangerous, and in these conditions you would be better carrying on to Funchal. During office hours you will probably be met by the marina rib and directed to a berth. Outwith office hours tie up to the long pontoon alongside the West breakwater.

The marina office takes care of all the formalities. When we were there (November 2006) the office was still in the old hotel complex up the hill, but it should be moving to the new buildings round the marina some time in 2007.

Facilities and Charges

The place was still very much under construction when were there, and was a building site during the day. Temporary facilities in the old hotel building were adequate but no more. The staff however were very helpful, orgainising car hire at a discount with the vehicle delivered to the marina and taking you shopping in the marina vehicles (the marina is a long way from any settlement).

Wi-Fi was free in the restaurant - but it only served meals until five thirty and closed completely at eight. This should all change early in 2007 whenthe new facilities on the waterfront begin to open.

The marina was not cheap - 15 euros a night was a negotiated discount for staying a week moored in a building site a week in a very small boat. However, the helpfulness of the staff and the beautiful location made up for it, and I believe that when the marina is finished it really will be a lovely spot to spend a few days.

Free wi-fi connection in the restaurant.

Car hire arranged for you. Buses into Funchal (via the airport). Flights to various UK and European destinations from Funchal

Things to Do

Take a bus into Funchal - better than a funfair ride. Hire a car and see this spectacular island. Locally there is a fantastic cliff walk from the car park at the end of the road.

Updates from more recent visitors to Quinto do Lorde ould be much appreciated, as it was definitely a work in progress when we visited..
