Fairwinds Round Ireland - The West Coast
Frenchport to Teelin

Saturday 31st July Frenchport - Teelin

We departed Frenchport at 06:15 after a disturbed night - the rolling got worse shortly after we retired to bed and continued for much of the night.

As we rounded Erris Head the wind dropped and the sea flattened out. We motor-sailed for the rest of day in bright sunshine with the genoa giving anything from 0.1 to 2 knots on top of the engine's four point two knots. (Maximum speed without black smoke!)

Donegal Bay was perhaps the most deserted stretch of coastal water I've ever crossed the visibility was was excellent and we saw one motor vessel and one yacht in twelve hours. The engine ran smoothly for thirteen and a half hours without a pause. With the autohelm steering it was a lazy day and I managed to read two novels.

Cliffs W. of Teelin

Teelin was a very pretty place, with some spectacular cliffs on the approach - which is hard to see until you are abeam. There are supposed to be four visitors' moorings, but they weren't obvious, so we anchored in good holding with the quay giving reasonable shelter from the South Westerly which sprang up as soon as we began to get the mainsail down!

(We found out later that visitors' moorings in Donegal are red and spherical rather than yellow and cylindrical as in the rest of Ireland). A small German yacht about the same size as Fairwinds came in and anchored further out, but they were gone when we got up.

We enjoyed a three course meal with a huge mackerel between us as a starter. It was caught about twenty miles offshore in 70 metres, so they seem to be everywhere! One day we'll catch something different.
