Sailing this weekend?

Postby DaveS » Wed Sep 09, 2009 4:34 pm

Given the improving forecast, anyone planning anything major or minor?

At the moment I'm thinking of getting up to Craobh on Thursday night and setting off - somewhere - on Friday morning. Anyone likely to be in the area and wish to meet up for sailing, drinking, eating or any combination thereof?

We'll be out but prob. returning to Balvicar on Friday evening to eat in the T&T. Friday is my birthday - I'm thinking of bagging Scarba. Sat is the Dick Gaughan concert on Easdale.

Likewise, planning to arrive Dunstaffnage on Thursday evening and setting off Friday morning. I'm still in negotiations for a couple of days off at the start of the week (but I'm reasonably confident of a successful outcome) so plans will depend on whether I have a long or longer weekend.

I'm departing Fleetwood Friday afternoon with Whitehaven or somewhere in my sights. Will Ch77 bounce that far?

Negotiations successful so I'm not back at work 'til Wednesday. Leaving home shortly and hope to see some of you over the next few days.

Silkie standing by on 77.

What a great weekend. Wind was a bit variable where we were, F3 or less, but pleasantly sunny, and good sailing on flat water while the breeze lasted.

Sorry we missed you Shuggy, but we met up with Silkie, Mr & Mrs Webcraft, DaveS at Puilladobhrain, and then the CPEDWs at the Dick Gaughan concert on Eilean Eisdeal.

We did the Clyde Cruising Club GSS regatta at Helensburgh on Liaison. What a weekend - 'specially Saturday 14 - 20 knots flat water and plenty sun. Great sailing, and we got 1st overall in Class Three.

We had sunshine and very variable windspeeds on Loch Lomond on Saturday afternoon - had to come home this morning for a christening.

Some of the high wind speeds were down to the slots between the hills at Inveruglas and Tarbet but I still find it difficult to understand where these long gusts come from in the centre of a high with sunshine. We had full main and jib which only gave 1 to 3 knts boat speed most of the time but overcanvassed in the gusts / squalls when the water was running back up the cockpit drain and the log was showing ( prob slightly optimistic ) 7s.

I should have mentioned that we met up with Silkie on Friday at Eilean na Cloiche off Lismore - we'd anchored up for a while waiting for some breeze. After that, the wind came back and we had a very pleasant Southerly F4, tacking down to Puilladobhrain, later in the afternoon. I thought Silkie was fairly going some - she passed two larger yachts also heading for PD. Not bad, these Hurley 22s...

Sorry to have missed everyone; we passed Fair Winds just south of PD after a breakfast stop in Easdale Sound following a 5.45am start from Ardfern to get through Fladda. A pleasant lunch stop in Oban Bay was followed by a sail to Lismore until the wind died off too much for our 13 tons.

Evening meal at the Pier House and some star watching. Very pleasant. Tafna is now decommisioned and awaiting a lift out. Back next year...

We tried to raise Nick on 77 but no joy!

Sorry we missed you Shuggy.

I did admire Tafna through the bins as you passed us, but failed to recognise her. We weren't on dual watch then, but would have heard if you had given us a quick call on 16.

Glad you had such a nice day for the last trip of the season. We are keeping Fairwinds in and hoping for a few more.

Demon Weekend in Morecambe Bay. Delightful sail over to Piel. New Autopilot is sensational as is the hot water system.
Broad reach home and in 12 knots of breeze we creamed away under that fantabulous grey spinnaker that you all know and love.
