Addicted To Adventure - Between Rocks and Cold Places

Postby BlowingOldBoots » Sun Feb 28, 2016 4:36 pm

Author: Bob Shepton, Yachtsman of The Year 2013

Bloomsbury, Adlard Coles Nautical. I purchased it as a paper back but it can be bought as an eBook as well.

Reverend Bob, as some know him is a remarkable man who sails and climbs in extreme and has lived one long adventurous life since around the 1930s. He is also a Vicar and has done much adventurous outdoor pursuits with kids in the past. The boat is called Dodo's delight. According tot he book 130000 miles at sea and over 100 first ascents

The book is about his adventurous life sailing up and down the world, up to Greenland, doing first climbs etc.

As a read the book is enjoyable and does not labour too much on all the routine bits of sailing and climbing but rather focuses on the adventures and mishaps along the way. As sailors there are real nuggets of information based on his experience e.g. ice and GRP, lying a hull beam on and recovering dismasted masts (modern thoughts: ice will slice up your GRP, you will roll lying a hull, cut away the mast as it may puncture the hull).

As well as an interesting story all his experience is mentioned in a matter of fact way and not condescending at all, he also is quite open about is weaknesses.
