Goodreads Choice Awards Best Horror

What can I say, dystopia and the undead in one novel, pure heaven. This book is very well written and is a joy to read. Absolutely no guts or gore (I am serious). Written in the first person the story charts the relationship between a young girl and her teacher in challenging times, many years after society has collapsed but is still functioning in a very limited way.

The characters are real, believable and each is built up over the length of the story, right to the final climax; the story is the people, not the situational dramas that flow logically and frame the character development, it is this that makes the novel standout. The journey that the characters make, is in a sense a 'road trip' where the naïvety of their perceptions is ripped apart piece by piece.

As a metaphor for the futility of common people, the struggle to exist in an increasingly desperate world, where irrelevancy and oblivion are all that there is to show for meaningless lives, then this book does it particularly well.

Give it a go and enjoy,

Alastair
