I know it was supposed to happen with the rig yards, but it didn't work. I suppose Portavadie marina is the next best thing from our point of view, what about the rest of the derelict (and sometimes dangerous) crap that's lying rotting round the coast? Someone must own it.

There's some muttering about turning the abandoned Ardyne yard into a marina as part of a bigger redevelopment, including a ferry to Rothesay (or in some reports, turning the Wemyss Bay - Rothesay service into a triangular one). There's a bit about it, rather out of date, at http://forargyll.com/2009/09/ardyne-poi ... nt-issues/.

I can remember watching the Ardyne rigs being built, with the Queen of Scots taking workers across from Rothesay each morning. It's now, what, thirty years since they left.

All these windmills are just a stupid waste of space and completely daft technology.

IN the first 6 months of 2011 Germany generated 20.8 percent of all its electricity from renewable sources, according to the German Association of Energy and Water Industries. According to the report, wind power increased to 20.7 billion kilowatt hours, or about 7.5 percent of total usage, while biomass accounted for 5.6 percent and hydroelectric energy provided 3.3 percent. The most significant increase was for photovoltaic solar, which increased more than 76 percent since the first half of 2010, generating 3.5 percent of electricity production.

Germany's target is 35% from renewables by 2020.

When we run out of oil/water/food there will be a natural cull either by starvation or war or some combination of the two.

And that's your ideal solution?

I wasn't proposing a solution.

It's a longterm problem.

Politicians don't look beyond the next election and staying in power so they do what's popular, they don't do longterm.
