Electrics and salt...

Postby sahona » Thu Sep 29, 2011 5:40 pm

It was a real shock to see the quote (for insurance claim) from the electronics man, after our near-sinking.
I thought he was 'avvin-a-larf' - changing and rewiring almost everything he could find.
Everything had worked on the return trip, apart from erratic charging.
However, as part of total clear-out of the engine room, I took home the bilge pump with its sensor and delay circuit.
After lying idle for a few weeks, it didn't work anymore! The connections showed a little discolouration and were physically firm, but electrically useless. Several push-on connectors had to be replaced, the sensor stripped and cleaned (Bellows switch) and the relay connectors re-tinned before I could pump any water!
Which just goes to show how things can go wrong long after the 'incident' From now on I'll keep quiet and let the professionals get on with their respective jobs.
