Sailing in my time-bomb.

Why do designers used a sacrificial part to do an important job?
I had a nagging suspicion about these parts!

Which seems to have been justified!
These are the hose connectors for the raw water cooling system on the gearbox ~ both of them! Allegedly, everyone should know about this, and regularly check, however, you could use iron/steel/plastic, in fact anything but copper-alloyed material, and never have to bother, according to the manufacturer.
So how do you know?..........................Smack it then try to keep your feet dry.

For anyone else with an old boat, it's a TMP/Nicor gearbox on a Perkins 4108... no sleep tonight eh?

Hope you can get it repaired quickly. The fact you are here posting about it doesn't mean you got stuck somewhere. It could have been a lot worse.
Good luck.

Engine running again yesterday. The boat actually came with one spare fitting (but I didn't know what it was)! the other I made up from the bosun's box and I got rid of the copper pipe at the same time, so it should stay good from now on.
