Foula

Postby Mark » Mon Jun 24, 2013 9:08 pm

Just watched a black and white film featuring Corporal Fraser. Apart from featuring the great man it showed off a great deal of the Island of Foula.

Just read a little bit about the island, quite an interesting place.

Some years ago I sailed with a young man who lived on Foula. He was somewhat at a loss when asked to boil some eggs. The conversation went:
"Don't you have hens on Foula?"
"Well, we did have some once but we forgot to put them in the henhouse one night. There was a gale that night and they blew away."

The Edge of the World. The British Film Institute DVD of the film also includes 70s BBC footage of Michael Powell and John Laurie etc making a return visit to Foula, and footage from 1923 and 1928 of St Kilda.

Presumably he was quite a large proportion of the population!

Thanks, so you got there way before me, wonder how I missed that thread.

Anyway I must have the documentary and can't find it online so I've invested a tenner in the DVD. I reckon I've bought 4 DVDs in the last ten years, and two of them have been recommended on Blue Moment which says something.

Will have a look for the book, right up my street.
