I have just read the following on the Isle of Rona website

"A safe mooring is provided in Big Harbour at a charge of £10 per night. Please phone 07831 293 963 to reserve, or call at the Lodge on arrival to check availability."

Has anyone been there lately?
Is there still room to anchor?
Are they trying to charge for anchoring?

There's only one mooring just off the end of the jetty, still leaving plenty of room to anchor.

Last time I was there the single mooring buoy off the pontoon was the mooring point for the pontoon and not for picking up. Has this changed?

Regards
Donald

Yes Don.
The change is that it is now for hire! Still attached to the pontoon block. (2009)
Don't think anyone would put out a decent scope that close to the landing, so it doesn't affect the anchorage really.

You might want to check this out:

Rona (Acarseid Mor) charges £1 a head harbour fees now - they have done a lot, there is a floating pontoon to land at and water, and when there were 15 yachts in last weekend the total take in the 'honesty' box was £1 . One of the yachties in question was the lady commodore of a well know West Coast yacht club. The owner is so fed up that he is thinking of filling the anchorage with moorings at £10 a night and collecting.

I spent a night there last year. The mooring is in a good spot and I was quite happy to spend ten quid on it. There is still loads of room to anchor although it is reputedly "well ploughed by yachts' anchors" so for a good night's sleep I don't mind putting a few quid into the island's coffers.
The only problem was that when we got out of the dinghy, we found a float with 'mooring booked' written on it, hanging off the rail at the pontoon. We were a bit unsure about whether this meant we had just nicked the mooring, but it turns out that Bill, the warden, will take the float out to the mooring to reserve it, if you phone him.
Great wee island, must get back there soon.
