Freebie

Postby marisca » Fri Nov 05, 2010 7:11 pm

I was composing an erudite contribution to the MCA tug thread and was trying to find details of exactly what the tugs do when I tripped over this site http://highsea.cz/nga/Pub141bk.pdf. My apologies if it is old hat but it may be of interest though nought to do with tugs. How come the colonies can produce this for free and our lot won't put it on a website and would charge for it if they did.

No longer Freebie

Postby Telo » Fri Nov 19, 2010 5:49 pm

Sadly, I don't think the US makes this freely available any longer (security considerations?). The edition you've linked to is the 2007 edition, but it's on a Czech site, and, it would appear, is no longer available from the US government's NGA and NOOA portals.

The NGA and NOOA links, which were previously posted here, are now dead. Also, Bowditch no longer seems to be available, unless it's hiding away in some new government site. I shall be pleased to be proven wrong; it was a good service and much valued.

I have stored, somewhere, electronic copies of Bowditch, as well as the Scottish, Irish and west coast of England SDs. Probably best to download them from the sailing sites before they also disappear.

EDIT: I have a 2010 edition of the Scotland SDs - pm me for a copy if you wish

IT seems that I have inadvertently misled this worthy forum. Folowing a recent post by Pagoda about this on YBW Scuttlebutt, the NGA portal seems to be working fine at http://msi.nga.mil/NGAPortal/MSI.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=msi_portal_page_62&pubCode=0010.

I presume it was temporarily down for maintenance when I tried it.

Bowditch

Postby Telo » Tue Nov 30, 2010 3:38 pm

Bowditch, "The American Practical Navigator", is still available for download at http://msi.nga.mil/NGAPortal/MSI.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=msi_portal_page_62&pubCode=0002.

Perhaps its me, but the NGA site seems a bit glitchy at the moment. They seem to have changed some of the URLs for these publications.
