Crinan Canal Sea Lock Closure - Update

Tuesday 22 July (1230 hrs)

Following the closure of the sea lock at the Crinan Canal on Sunday, specialist divers have completed an inspection of the damage.

It was discovered that the original bond between the concrete cill and the lock floor has failed. The structure, built in the 1930s, will require substantial repairs.

To minimise inconvenience to canal users, British Waterways Scotland is planning a temporary repair intended to limit closure of the sea lock to around 10-14 days. As this is a challenging underwater repair, it is difficult to be more precise. Other factors that may have an influence on the speed of the repair are the availability of dive teams, local weather conditions and quick access to the necessary materials. Safety checks will be carried out before the lock is opened.

A full repair, which could take several weeks, will be planned for the winter period when the canal is in low season.

British Waterways Scotland has mobilised a dedicated team who are working towards getting the sea lock open safely and swiftly. In the meantime, we regret any inconvenience caused to those wishing to transit the canal.

Further updates regarding the re-opening date will be issued when available.
