Someone to engrave a headstone

Postby Nick » Mon Oct 13, 2014 7:48 pm

.
I have been offered a piece of local slate of sufficient size to make a headstone.

Does anyone know of any person or business who could carve the inscription ?

(I posted this on Seil Chat a month or so ago but have received no replies, so thought I would try on here just in case . . . )

Just a bit of an off the wall suggestion but why not try to do it yourself. Not sure if this is possible with a multi-tool or whether it is a skill that takes years to acquire.

Have never met you so apologies if this is a bit personal or that you would find it too distressing x

Any particular reason for not using your local Monumental Mason? http://www.memorialgravestonesoban.co.uk/

Don't know anything about them except what's on the website.

I've emailed them but they haven't replied yet.

I suspect they will oly o 'production line' headstones where they supply the tones themselves.

Our local man makes a plastic stencil which is used with a water jet to carve the stone.

Stones were available at a vast range of prices, so I don't see why the carving couldn't be a transaction on it's own.

I would suggest calling in personally, rather than email.

Hope you get sorted.

I carved a house name on a slab of slate once.

It's not hard to cut, mark it out with chalk until you like what you have & then carve away with whatever you have. I think I may have used a screwdriver or a bit of stainless rod. After I had carved out the name, I filled in the letters with white paint which produced an excellent result, neat & easy to read from the road.

There is a company round the corner from me that use precision water jet technology.

Wrong side of the country for you I know, and I have no idea of the cost.

Here's their details anyway -
