'Cos it would mean taking the end cap off the boom, the only running rigging rope that stays on the boat over winter is the boom outhaul. It's a Seldèn boom with lever clutches at the gooseneck for reefing pennants and outhaul. Yesterday while clawing my way off a radioactive and rocky lee shore - actually, sailing nicely in a 20kt breeze, but the radioactive bit is true - there was a bang and the main went baggy. The outer layer of the braid on braid outhaul had parted and I've only had the boat 7 years (and I'm sure the string wasn't new then).
So don't be a lazy sod like me, check every rope every year. I wonder how long the inner core will last?
PS Where was I?
Boom Outhaul

So - are we talking about a big lump of granite rock? - or have they started to bury nuclear waste at Port Edgar?

Not granite, the latter is pretty close, but not Port Edgar. Though adding nuclear waste to PE's list of woes would add a certain piquancy - what is SEPA's hotline (yes, that's a pun) number?

Both right. Perhaps explains the strange demeanour of the denizens of that area. And now we are building another bridge to let more out!
