I saw one of these in Ikea:

£2
I thought, a bit of wood stain and some varnish and that will be OK for the keys/moby/HHGPS to live in while aboard.
Looking in the Force4 one handed read that arrived recently I notice that Teak options are available, it doesn’t say whether mortgage facilities are offered.

£36
I’m going back to Ikea with the binocs to see if there is anything to fit them.

You can't get teak out of Ikea.

Only ieak.

We did have quite a nice range in oak (so a wee bit more expensive) in the small storage/home organisation area but I can't find it online so it may be discontinued. I'll check tomorrow.

The range I was thinking of has in fact been discontinued. Sorry Bob.

Never mind, I missed the blanket box that looked like it would make a cockpit table too. It was 1x.5x.5 M and made out of crissy crossy wood like a grating. Twas only £50 IIRC.

I found the blanket box thingy (but it's a storage chest or somat) in Ikea today, it's a Hol and bigger than this I found a pic of:

It isn't as chunky as I thought it was going to be but that could be good as it's quite manageable and light. I'm only going to use the top for my cockpit table so there will be 4 sides going spare :)

Will you use it "as is" or do you have a plan for marinising?

Plan A is to stain it so it's closer to the existing shade and then varnish it. It's going to spend 99.99% of it's time inside so it should be ok with Yacht Varnish.

I have stained the cutlery thing in my first post and it looks a bit dark. I'll varnish it with the Hol table top and see how it comes out.

I have worked on the bits of Ikea wood and I'm not too dischuffed with the results so far. The "handy keeper" has doubled and looks like this:

The Hol table top is coming on and looks like this:

I think that's just stained and not varnished, but I'm not so sure. It has one coat of varnish now too. Work has stopped until the leg appears:

Then I can make a disk to fit the socket to, and stain it and make it look like the rest of it.

Must say, I admire your adaptive skills.

Hey, that's really quaint. Our Commodore down here on the Hamble would have our guts for gaiters if we fitted something not made from carbon fibre. Perhaps I can paint it black and not get noticed. :?

Carbon Fiber? On a Westerly? Am I hearing you right? (In my best Peter Kay voice).

The die hards in the WOA would have a dickey fit if I tried to fit anything that didn't come out of Waterlooville.

Anyway, carbon fiber sounds far to racy, I cruise you know, never race unless there is another sailing boat in sight (preferably 5 foot shorter and crewed by learners).
