That is interesting and could explain this common problem. I was told many years ago that CH16 has twice the bandwidth of the other channels, and I have presumed that this the reason for the better reception. :)

I was in Portree in 2007 (bad weather precluded those latitudes in 2008!). In 2007 (late July) there were visitor moorings but they were all utilised (I did arrive after approx 1800 so a bit late), so anchored near the slipway. Kinlochbervie harbour dues

Does seem a lot for 2.5 hours but how much is an overnight stay? I seem to recall that Highland Council do some sort of discount, whereby you pay in advance for about 4 overnight stops at different harbours and this is very reasonable compared to commercial marinas or visitor moorings.
