Confession Time

I have been unfaithful  For many years I have wanted to downsize from my Ecume De Mer to a Micro 18. Just before I had a fortnight in France I bought a Micro 18(specifically a Micro Gem 550) and last Sunday somebody bought my Ecume De Mer - the money is tucked away in the bank. As yet I haven'...

Cumbrae

I saw in the news that a body had been found in the water near the Cumbrae Ferry slip - does anybody know any more detail?

Good News For Me ...

I started 2015 with a new job that I accidentally got without applying for, and it came with a decent payrise so that was good - and somewhat unexpected at my age. Last Monday my daughter was successful in gaining a post with a recruitment company - a big change from her current post of managing a c...

Re: Caley Holiday vs transit.

I heard a rumour that Aquaplane can walk on water - or at least try to:)

Re: A couple of things from a week ago.

I went and had a look with Ash last Saturday. There was some savage damage to the bow, 10mm stainless bolts bent and stem head fitting rived off. Also a hole in the foredeck where the cleat used to be. I suspect it came off one of the moorings south of Inveraray, there were a couple of boats there ...

Re: Surveyor Recommendation

My insurance company has never asked me for a survey - I can only assume that it is because my boat is of much lower value than your luxury yachts.

Re: Moorings

There are swinging moorings for rent in Fairlie Bay - some owned by Fairlie Quay and some rented out by somebody who I think lives in Millport.

Re: Survey for insurance purposes

So if you go from 8mm wire to 10mm wire that would mean putting a significantly greater load on other bits of the boat. I have never been asked by my insurance to replace rigging, and it is certainly older than 12 years. Which insurer? Navigators & General - I suspect it is because my boat is v...

Re: Survey for insurance purposes

If you go to a thicker diameter of wire is there a danger that you are overstressing something else? I have seen many threads where people say that you should tighten shrouds to a certain percentage of the breaking strain(or something) of the wire. So if you go from 8mm wire to 10mm wire that would ...

As usual I'm late on this one but that doesn't make my condolences value any less. Really sorry Nick.

The link should only take you to the current one - I have had a few others over the years - including one from the Dryathlon last year.

IKEA

I recently bought a wind up torch in IKEA - it fulfilled my criteria of cheap and bright. I don't know any specs for it but it seems to be a very fine piece of kit. It feels sturdy and gives a good light. I don't know how it will survive on the boat - obviously it makes no pretence of being waterpro...

A Begging Letter

I have signed up to do a Dryathlon - no alcohol for the whole of January - the idea is to raise some support for Cancer Research UK. This is a worthwhile cause as most of us will know of people who have suffered because of cancer so any support would be greatly appreciated. So far I have found it ha...
