Moidart, smoydart

We went into Loch Moidart about 6 years ago. Hearts were in mouths as we were using Martin Lawrence's guide. He does tend to overplay the hazardous aspect I feel. Anyway, using his chartlet and notes, it was pretty straightforward taken at a slow pace in settled weather. The entrance channel winds a...

12V Time Switch

I can't yet think of a use for it but I feel this http://www2.westfalia.net/shops/car_accessoires/motor_electronics/miscellaneous_12v_appliances/12_volt_appliances/53108-time_switch_door_12_volts.htm?vbSESSID=0701bfb4c71079d8b7fdf5c8e813e77a must have lots of uses on any boat with those cigar lighte...

Another solution for free-running salt is to add a few grains of rice to the salt. In a salt cellar with suitably sized holes, the rice doesn't escape but it helps to keep the salt dry for quite a while (a season anyway).

Dereliction of duty

I've not been allowed near the boat since 17th June but I'm hoping for a reconciliation next weekend, if I behave myself. Though from my locations in southern England, northern France and Edinburgh I gather I haven't missed much except perhaps this last weekend.

Be sure to keep to the south side of Loch Bracadale on the way into Harport ... http://www.bluemoment.com/snark.html . On your way to or from Talisker, consider a stop at Doune http://www.doune-knoydart.co.uk/yachts.html where there's not much, except if you phone beforehand you can book dinner and ...

Report back

I think that particular model has now disappeared from the catalogue and it's a fast-moving market but I have no plans to upgrade soon so I'm not up to date. On the whole it has been very successful. It works well in the cockpit under the sprayhood. Legible and only needs a 12v supply. There are 2 i...

Not meaning to imply a consequential action, just setting the scene (advised in my "Teach yourself story-telling" book).

In Edinburgh there are two plumbing/heating firms - "Specific Heat" and "Scottish Thermal Unit". But I wonder if these might be a bit esoteric for the wider audience without higher physics pre 1980 (or equivalent).

Hail the Tobermory Harbour Association

After an unexpected encounter with Silkie in Oban on Saturday morning, we took the tide north to Tobermory. It was a rapid passage under varying amounts of genoa in a southeast wind that fluctuated from F3 to F6. We arrived in Tobermory Bay as it peaked at force 7 in torrential rain so we quite fanc...

It's bound to clear up...

And here's me with an extra long weekend (incorporating Monday and Tuesday) coming up. The forecast yesterday morning (Wind guru) was mod/strong northerly, getting less later, no rain though quite cold but sunny. Near perfect to head south, Tayvallich or Craighouse I thought. Today they promise 35kt...

It's ironic...

that an Ultraleds advert appears at the foot of the page as I read about your problem.
I notice the link you gave doesn't work - have they withdrawn that product already? Or just redesigned the website.

Solar battery charger

Silkie, Didn't you ask about a Maplin version in the other place recently? This one http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/Batteries+&+Power+Supplies/Battery+Chargers/ICP+GLOBAL+TECHNOLOGIES/SE-135/displayProduct.jsp?sku=BT0326762 from CPC looks to me like a bargain for keeping the battery topped up when yo...

There was a plethora of logos across the bottom of the sign but it wasn't clear who was prohibiting. Your research suggests it's a request to avoid certain spots but that wasn't my impression from a quick read of the sign. Talking to locals at Barcaldine, this was a move by SNH.

Season off to a good start, mostly

On Thursday late evening, we climbed aboard Blue Shift, afloat at last. Much of Friday was spent getting sails on, avoiding trying to start the engine, connecting up wires, avoiding trying to start the engine, checking the contents of the drinks locker, avoiding trying to start the engine and so on....
