Re: Anchors vs Moorings

I have nothing at all against hotels etc laying moorings to gain passing customers especially when the anchorage would be in deeper water with poor holding ground. However I am very aware over the years of these moorings laid by hotels and other commercial/private moorings encroaching on traditional...

Re: Carradale Moorings

Yes I presume that the 12 metre length as suggested means swinging space and I also thought the moorings looked close together especially when there is no lack of sea room. Perhaps the moorings will be realligned when the divers complete the laying of the moorings. The honesty box has a cover over i...

Re: Carradale Moorings

Apologies all round from myself and Carradale Harbour/Moorings Group. I was informed that the moorings had been laid and ready for use, however this information was not correct. The moorings had been laid as promised by the fish farm sponsers but were not completed and as a result not ready for use ...

Re: Carradale Moorings

Hi Ash Enjoy your sail. The weather is looking good with West winds. Carradale now requires to push on with a wee landing slipway or steps and loos/showers. I find going into the bay at Portnacoul easier for getting ashore. Farther information can be obtained on their website moorings/carradale harb...

Carradale Moorings

The moorings promised for Carradale have finally been laid thanks to Lakeside Marine (fish farm). Four moorings have been put in place to the North of the harbour in Portnacoul. Overnight charge of £10 in a yellow honesty box located at foot of Quay Brae as you turn down to the carpark. :oldtroll:

Scottish Mountain Rescue Figures

According to figures issued last week there were 573 incidents on Scottish mountains last year. A total of 693 persons were assisted of whom 270 were injured and 52 people who died. 158 of these incidents were non-mountaineering. Sailing about in oor wee boats seems relatively safe by comparison aft...

No Room in the Inn

Oban is a very busy place as you all know. Old Troll visiting Oban on Saturday last in the wind and rain got the very last berth available at Oban marina. The sailing club moorings vere also all taken. Other yachts were searching for a place to lay there weary and very wet heads. We came round from ...

Re: Red and Green - why is it?

A very interesting question. "If to starboard should red appear it is your duty to keep clear". Methinks the comments relating to stop or take evasive action on seeing red and stand on vessel or go on seeing green are close to the answer. There must be some of the oracles on here who can a...

Re: Gybing

:oldtroll: I expect that I have to put my input on this one. Not all Yachtmaster Instructors teach the sheeting in prior to gybeing. I have sailed yachts that if the mainsheet was sheeted in the yacht would not gybe. In my opinion I prefer to do and teach this gybeing business from the main sheet ea...

Re: The Clyde Pause

There is also a before daylight in the morning pause which was more prominent than the evening pause. As ye olde ringnet herring fisherman from bygone days of yore this feature was played to advantage after a night of strong winds. A turn of tide also appeared to enhance the effect. Perhaps I have b...

Wood sources and Supplies

Westfield Timber of Harriet Street In Rutherglen keep various hardwoods and marine ply. Also can cut to size and shape if required. I am sure the other companies mentioned are first class but just in case worth a try. :oldtroll:

Re: Why no RYA consultation in Oban?

I struggled to complete the survey as I found it mostly of no interest to me personally. If you are racing etc I expect the RYA do a reasonable job but otherwise a non event. Even when involved with RYA sailing courses I find the organisation very distant. Perhaps if they came down from the top of t...
