Living in W Lothain (but normally sailing on the west coast only), Linlithgow is real handy, about 10 mins away!

Re: Attempts end to rescue beached whale on South Uist

I heard on the radio they wonder what to do with it. Why not cook it and eat it. Feed quite a few people with 15 tonnes of whale. Reasonably fresh!

I remember the first time I tried whale (in Iceland), and could not tell it from beef.

Re: Eek! Huge waves off Lewis

...and I thought the 5m swell I came into west of Islay 3 weeks back was big enough. I was reading in "Rock Lighthouses of Britain" (C Nicholson), about the building of Skerryvore... "The dawn of April 17th 1842 saw Stevenson making his preliminary inspection of the season, and findin...

Re: Oban lifeboat launches to yacht rescue off Maiden Island

Given that they were only just outside the Oban harbour north entrance, it would surely be possible to sail in, and pick up a mooring? There were two of them on board! And there's loads of scope for moorings to pick in Oban, Kerrera, or even drop the anchor somewhere. There does seem a strange (to m...

A group of Belgian Radio Amateurs landed on Rockall today, and have started transmitting radio from there. They intend to stay until tomorrow unless weather prevents them.

Re: Pipeline Jura?

A wire could be such a diameter, but would be expected to carry a very large amount of power.

Maybe this is that Stirling group's answer to undergrounding the Beauly to Denny line? Take it the long way round?

Pipeline Jura?

I noticed this last week in sound of Islay. Is someone laying a pipe across Jura? Why?

Poor image, some camera shake, but only one I took!

Re: Oban to Glasgow - ideas?

By "knocked down", I mean that the boat was at such a heel that the cabin windows were in the water. I was on the mooring, no sails up, dinghy on painter (short) at stern. The wind becoame quite violent, despite it being offshore (W). I was in the cabin, and suddenly there was a howling sh...

When I arrived at Ardminish, Gigha, it was like this.. http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg170/mm5aho/Sailing/oban%20rhu%20sept11/IMG_3548.jpg Then later is was like this.. http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg170/mm5aho/Sailing/oban%20rhu%20sept11/IMG_3553.jpg The ferry still ran though, looking l...

Re: Oban to Glasgow - ideas?

Wind direction Ardminish: It was about SW backing W. Worst was when from W. That's about straight offshore, which is why I thought it'd be fine there. But the hills of Gigha are not high enough. Either that or those three "dancing ladies" (as they call them) - the three windmills, must hav...

Re: Oban to Glasgow - ideas?

I'm home now, and like many things in life, it didn't go quite to plan. The weather was the main variant. From Dunstaffnage, to Colonsay last Sunday. Overnight at anchor next to the ferry pier (some big steel yacht was hogging the wave screen). A kind offer of a mooring in the next bay (from a fello...

Re: ETVs gone in a fortnight

"The costs of a single serious incident could wipe out the £8m savings at a stroke."

but would there be one of these each year?
Ignoring inflation that might have cost, since 1993, £144million?
