Mizzen track

Here's one for the deck-gear x-spurts. My mizzen sheet attaches to the deck with a triple block on the centre line. The sheet then comes forward to a block and jammer just aft of the (centre) cockpit. At the weekend I was beating into the N'ly and while the genoa and main were doing what they do bes...

Re: Great footage

If you look at the YouTube page meticulous inspection reveals the video came from Arena Aviation. Who? Don't know, but not 177 or the Coastguard. Pretty impressive shooting and flying, though. How they circled the lifeboat with the camera on-subject I can't fathom, unless the chopper flew backwards ...

Re: Crown Estate removes unlicensed moorings from Kilchattan

So is that (£40) the actual cost of Crown dues per mooring then? Where would I enquire if I can install a legit mooring in a particular bay where there are allready dozens of moorings? Advice appreciated. C_W Eammon, The figure of £40 is for a mooring licence administered by a mooring association. ...

Re: Scenario II

I lost the Avon while towing on a crossing from Sanda to Rathlin. The patch on the bow with the D ring had pulled clean off. Two lessons learned... 1. don't tow the dink on proper trips; 2. if you do tow use a bridle linking the bow D ring to the side-rope fixing points. By the time the dinghy was c...

Re: New Member

Welcome, Old Troll. I am parked for the Summer round the corner at Loch Riddon but for some odd reason the boat prefers to move round to Colintraive when I am on board. I can't work it out. I pop up to the bar to find out if other boats have the same habit and, right enough, it seems I am not alone....

Re: OT: Died trying to live off the land in the UK.

I knew the late "Snibbs" Scott off and on when I was living in Girvan. The Sunday Post ran a "gentleman of the road" story on him, claiming he lived off the shore and road-kill. He lived in a cave just South of Bennane Head on the Ballantrae road and was a regular sight walking t...

It has been proven mathematically that a bumble bee cannot fly.

Re: Suppliers of Oxalic acid

S&R are a real find. I used to call in for my old cooker's necessary... I am not allowed to name it 'cos I was told on TOP it was unavailbale without a licence and I would go to the tower for even suggesting such a thing. Anyway, every time I called in I came away with a bagful of other stuff, i...

Re: Being Serious for Once

The legislation that empowers the MMO does indeed refer to the UK but the MMO website appears to only be concerned with England with Wales and Scotland excluded. The Marine (Scotland) Act 2010 seems to have covered the same sort of ground (or water) but as far as I can see makes no reference to the...

Re: Situations Vacant: Sanda - Update

Fellow mooring trot occupiers came back after a week's cruising, including a MOK rounding with praise for the ex-Byron Darnton. They took one of the four moorings for £10 a night and ate ashore two nights. No problem with access to the rest of the island. They reported a reasonably priced menu and h...

With one of these I have never, in Scotland, succeeded in getting better than tepid water after hours of exposure to the sun. Has anyone else managed? I still use it, but fill it from the kettle. :) I christened mine on Saturday with the boat on the mooring. The boat has a deep centre cockpit and I...

We missed you by a few hours. I was in Eilean, Alex Morton's Colvic Sailor on Saturday night into Sunday, but we were away from the hotel moorings after brekky. Maybe it was the aroma of Alex's venison sausages that attracted the beastie. What was of interest the previous day was that after years wi...

Re: A visit with purpose

Slightly off the Glasgow-Cumbrae route but I often use http://www.robbiesdrams.com/main.asp which is in Ayr. A digression, but somewhere in the Lochranza distillery there is a barrel of the first distilling with my name on it. I paid £400 for a bond when Hall Currie was raising investment money and ...

Buzzards perchance?
It is easiest to tell the difference between buzzrds and golden eagles when they are in flight. Eagles have long flight feathers at the tips of their wings.

Re: Time expired pyrotechnics (flares to you)
Obviously I'll 'phone ahead myself to ensure acceptance but do I understand from your post that they only take old flares on Sundays?
I got the impression from Clyde CG that Sunday morning is the only option, but I did not press the issue. The CG station must be manned at other time...
