Re: RYA Response to Coastguard Reforms

I don't know the area so I'll take your word for it. Problem is the gov probably won't - so you need to be able to quote number of times these tugs have been used, quantities of traffic, and all the rest. How realistic is the notion of being able to hire a tug at short notice. I would GUESS that the...

Re: RYA Response to Coastguard Reforms

If you are going to seek to oppose this proposal you do really need to be more precise in the issues. For example a 999 call for a lost walker will be routed to the local police who will involve the most appropriate resource - probably mountain rescue - to deal. Its unlikely to involve coastguards. ...

I'm sure you are aware of probably the most common use for these scales.

"I suspect that these plastic devices will mostly be used when indulging in solitary pleasures."

You may wish to reword this post - some of the more delicately nurtured may get the wrong idea

Re: Are you getting your share?

Do you get several glasses or just the one. I wonder what the correct behaviour is - if you are visiting friends do you take your own measure or rely on borrowing the hosts? If the host is serving drinks does he measure out all the drinks in one measure or have separate measures for whiskey, wine, a...

The cups will be delivered to your door in due course when the delivery people have completed the cup delivery training course, and the associated ethnic awareness course and H&S course. Each delivery person will be preceded by a risk assessor to ensure delivery can be made safely and will be ac...

Re: FishFight - new campaign from Hugh Fearsomely-Witless

I'll almost certainly be signing up to this, but before I do, a quick google suggests that discard occurs for a myriad of different reasons. What's HFW's proposal(s) to stop it? I am not sure but I assume that the only way is for the fishermen to be allowed to land their 'disallowed' fish rather th...

The goose counter

For anyone mature enough to remember "whats my line" - the little mime at the start would have been hilarious

Re: Canada Geese

I believe that in some circumstances landowners can receive payments for leaving set areas of land to grass for the geese to feed on.

At least that is in some parts of Scotland, certainly on Islay

Might be worth a call to the bird huggers.

Re: Coastguard Reorganisation

I would strongly recommend you leave it well alone.

These things serve no useful purpose other than generating violent arguments on sailing fora. A sort of electronic version of the angels on a pin head debate.

I think its one of those human nature things.

Its much easier to convince someone of a fantasy than a fact. And once convinced he'll fight anyone to the death to defend his belief

Re: Coastguard Reorganisation

"Ah, this explains the satellite controlled VHF Ch16 theory allegedly being taught by RYA accredited centres like Port Edgar. Obviously they know what's coming!"

This is one that I've not come across. Can you tell me something about it please.

Re: Coastguard Reorganisation

"HMCG will, I am sure, view their recruitment policy as non-discriminatory but I would bet that it has not been unhelpful in an organisation where employment costs are so significant as to be able to reduce labour costs by "de-skilling" the job, broadening the field from which recruit...
