Re: Hazards approaching Dunstaffnage

The black plastic oil can seems to have been there for years. God knows what it is tied to. Several times I was tempted to check it out, but we were always headed back for the marina when passing it, and I couldn't be bothered.

Re: Rigging?

Seen 3, know of one other. Out of the 4, 3 were westerly yachts. Not sure that really accounts for anything, other than all westerly boats are well past 10 years old. 2 were at WHYW, when conditions didn't seem that bad. One was Storm Mhor mentioned by Marisca above ( saw her towed back into Bunessa...

Re: Hamish Haswell-Smith Obituary

Very sad news. The book is a superb monument to him. The obituary describes a man who crammed a lot into his life. Makes me feel I need to get going on stuff!

Re: Stavanger to Oban - any advice

Hi Harold, welcome to the forum. We had 5 folk on a 40 foot boat. So could run 3 watches, which meant everyone got a 6 hour break, which means everyone got a reasonable amount of sleep, and your watch moves through the day. I find 2 on 2 off, or 4 on 4 off too lacking in sleep, and your watch doesn'...

Re: Norway Pilot Guide: Den Norske Los

Its a bit annoying if they discontinue the PDF's, but it is a bit like complaining about a free lunch :) . One thing we found this summer was ubiquitous 5G phone signal from Lofoten to Træna to Bergen. So the online version should be available pretty much anywhere.

Re: Norway Pilot Guide: Den Norske Los

I think this gives the link to the current PDF's: https://www.kartverket.no/en/Maps--Nautical-Charts/Nautical-Publications/The-Norwegian-Pilot-Guide/ The statement on the above page implies that the PDFs will be updated once its all online? I printed these all out and used them this summer on our tr...

Re: Stavanger to Oban - any advice

I think Nick has it right. We had 2 really good trips there and back this summer. What was in our favour was the luxury of time to wait for a good weather window, and we also had the luxury of being fully crewed so we could run 3 watches , which I feel makes a big difference on a passage when everyo...

Re: Stavanger to Oban - any advice

We did Shetland (Unst) to Ålesund in may , fully crewed ( 5 up) 40 ft yacht. With a good forecast we had a reasonable romp over ( it was appx 240 miles in 31 hours). Coming back we sailied from just south of Bergen to Kirkwall with a solid northerly for the first 24 hours , we ended up motorsailing ...

Re: oop north

Good in parts :D . Got ourselves up to Lerwick waited for weather window. Departed Lerwick with 4 days weather looking good - intending to sail straight to Lofoten. 2 crew (out of 5) hit with seasickness so put into Balta. Recovered next day headed off, wind didn't pan out so put into Ålesund, weath...

Re: Back to basics - Clearance under bridges

Bottom of page of tide tables in Reeds lists height of HAT above chart datum, and work out from there, I guess you can interpolate HAT same way as you would standard tidal heights ? Have to admit that I am in the camp that like plenty of clearance. The optical delusion that you are going to hit the ...
