Re: Interesting plans from Calmac

I sail past Western Ferries pier at McInroys point Gourock often and have always admired that system of holding the ferry by the propulsion system against a pier built for that. I see they have now started rebuilding the Dunoon side pier after this summer doing the Gourock side. Is it true that West...

Re: Broadford Bay Skye developments?

I have sailed past there! But not stopped, didn't seem much to stop for .
It's as part of the editorial team of the CCC Sailing directions that I'm enquiring after someone reported a new pontoon there.
Someone else has suggested that this could be the Kyle pontoons wintering location?

Broadford Bay Skye developments?

Can anyone report any developments of pontoons or a new quay in Broadford Bay Skye?
There's a report from a passing yacht of something happening there. Anyone know what?

Re: Any news from the west?

I should have said "I support SOME local use" or words to that effect. I don't agree with locals hogging it, and filling the facilities.

Re: Any news from the west?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcmQb1MUxsM This video is of boats on moorings at Gourock. On Sunday evening coming ashore Phil noticed a nearby boat's mooring strop had come off the stemhead fitting and was lying over the toerail. We stopped and I climbed aboard and reset it and set the pin that h...

Re: Any news from the west?

I support local boats using these new facilities. I have a vague memory somewhere of seeing a locals price list (unsure where, but this year. Possibly Lochmaddy?) where I figured that a local could keep a boat there for a year from about the price of a visitor berth for a few days. But there should ...

Re: Any news from the west?

Further on Castlebay: One fellow Rival (Rockall trip) anchored where the moorings used to be, and discovered that the remnants of the old moorings were left there on the seabed, and fouled his precious anchor (not even a Knox, so unsure why "precious", and he would not abandon it. Meantime...

Re: Port Bannatyne update

I've also anchored at the west end of Kames bay, but think that it drops off really fast - a bit like anchoring at the west end of Holy Loch - a mudflat with a precipitous drop at east edge.
But I've still done it at both places. But then, like Pagoda I have a good anchor!

Re: Nearest Measured Mile To Craobh Marina

I used to have one of those, and did the calibration both by measured mile (Arran, yes, its still there), and by GPS. Best I've found is the canals (Caledonian or Crinan) with their permanent slack water, but have done this at sea also using the GPS. There's a factor to adjust. I used to have the ST...

Re: Rockall by Rival

11days later, back at departure point at Kip. That's some wild place, Rockall. Worth its own weather forecast!

Rockall by Rival

We leave for Rockall on Wednesday at 1800 from Kip on a fundraising voyage for able2sail, the Scottish sailing charity that takes disabled people out for days sailing (with their family usually). Its about 1000 miles round trip, 2 women, 2 men, 10 days, 2 stops (Castlebay westbound and Stornoway eas...

Re: Crinan Canal Closed

Got thru today, but slow as usual. Two Russian boatloads behind us, and others going a bit slow. In at 0830, out at 1545. The days of 4.5 hour passages there are gone it seems. The office staff seemed to do well fixing the lock 6 arm, but the whole atmosphere in that organisation seems sad. Slow sai...

Re: Crinan Canal Closed

We often only open 1 gate, being such a narrow boat, wonder if they might let us thru like that? 2 big boats on boatyard visitor moorings with fenders out, suggests there might be a queue?

Re: Crinan Canal Closed

Just arrived at Crinan to take a shortcut. Maybe not!
Been a tad windy this last few days. 4 tired sailors. Left rum this morning. Lochmaddy morning before.
