Stavanger to Oban - any advice

I'm awa to Eberdeen Sunday (free bus you see), to get a flight to Stavanger to help take a boat back to Oban. Anything special to know about Stavanger? Unsure of route, see what the weather says, but either Caley canal or "roon the top". Looks like Cape Wrath is about 100 miles further, bu...

Re: Sailing from Edinburgh

And with a bus pass that's a free bus journey to Gourock.
I'm in West Lothian (not quite Edinburgh). Takes 1h30 by bus, or 1h15 by car, but the car costs a lot more.

Re: I know who this is!

Boat looks about 32ft. What's the burgee?
Flat bow, blue antifoul, blue dodger,... think I've seen that somewhere about.

Re: Is My Knox Broken?

Yes, that sounds like a serious problem. A serious anchor should retrieve at least 400kg of seabottom when you weight it, along with a cubic metre of weed and otjer rubbish. I anchored overnight in Airds Bay (F7-8 northerly). We ranged about 10m either side of the directly down wind position accordi...

Re: SIPR 2019

We were pleased to complete again, after several retirements. Good runners makes a lot of difference, but runners who don't get seasick makes ALL the difference! We gained some and lost some at times. At times we sailed past a bunch of stationary boats, and at others they sailed past us! Tides playe...

Re: Stern chainplate rebuild - thoughts?

Dave beat me to the same suggestion. Avoid water into the GRP inside the hole. What metal is in inside? Possibly carbon steel if the exposed bit is, so even more important. Oversize, fill then re-drill.

Re: LED Flares

ditto Contender. Spares for the Jabsco, a split pin for everything, nuts bolts, tools, grease, spare anchor, spare chain, ropes, spare washboards, spare sails, spare spares... Can't imagine the weight of it all, no wonder its a slow boat.

Hyskeir Light is an interesting place to stop briefly on the way, in good weather.

Re: Review of 2018

I missed this thread too - wonder how? Started out in April doing the CCC opening muster, then in May off to Oban rounding the Mull of Kintyre for the 1st of several times that year. Started the SIPR race, but decided not to prolong the misery of one runner, and we turned round near Gigha and went b...

Re: Anchor winch woes

Not on a windlass, but on other DC motors, I've bought oversized cheap brushes for other things, and filed them down to size. A similar case was a set costing over £50 replaced by a £5 set and 40 minutes filing to size. Watch for spring compatibility on the types with springs permanently attached. S...

Re: Jerryca sh

I've used 25l plastic jerrycans (roughly square cross section, handle on top) for times when I wanted to take a lot of fuel. I suspect that the 10l ones would be far easier, though the 25l ones are easy to secure on deck. They're juts manageable to retrieve and bring to the cockpit for emptying into...

For this season coming I just acquired a new toy, tablet running Marine Navigator on Android. I have yet to experiment with integrating Antares.
