Re: Refurbishing an anchor windlass

I have a VS1000 south pacific that I went to great lengths (and pain) reinstalling to fix the dreadful bodge the previous owner had done. The motor has now packed up due to the permanent stator magnets coming loose and moving around in the casing. Cutting to the chase - are you interested in selling...

Re: LED Flares

The instructions say hold above head height to avoid blinding yourself. I read this about 15 mins after switching the thing on and blinding myself.

Re: LED Flares

Ordered one on Friday, arrived today. Feels like a genuine bit of safety kit, rather than a glorified torch. I hope I never use it, just like the pyros it replaces. Removes the hassle of disposing of time expired flares (back garden on Nov 5) or buying new ones every couple of years (Duncans on Apri...

Re: LED Flares

Are we allowed to subsidise the cost by selling time-expired red pyros to football fans?

Re: I never realised

Its no problem if you know what you are doing, but Calmac's patience with yachts farting about and impeding the ferries has been exhausted. Its often charterers, usually a bunch of ruddy-faced southern brethren coming in the north channel for the first time who then want to motor slowly in the centr...

Re: I never realised

And its still contradictory anyway - keep to the right etc, but presumably on the way out of the bay going north they actually want you to keep to the left using the "recommended" small boat channel. No mention of how to deal with a head-on situation between two small vessels that their gu...

Re: I never realised

Its on the Oban bay website. If they want visitors from elsewhere to know about it they need to put a pile of hard copies in places on the way to Oban. Did they discuss distribution of the new guide at the meeting?

Re: I never realised

Where did you see the comic? I told Paul at CMAL that they can produce all the guidance and regulations in the world, but unless they make them easily available to visitors from outside the area, you will still get folks going through the centre of the north channel at 5kts purely because they don't...

Re: XC Weather and the coming storm . . .

The Beeb dumped the (UK) Met Office a couple of years ago in favour of the (French) meteo group which caused much spluttering into their warm beer down south. I've found the beeb's tv forecasts more informative as a result, with occasional mention of the jet stream, something the met office never di...

Re: XC Weather and the coming storm . . .

At least meteo admits this by having a 65% reliability index for next Wednesday. In settled conditions in the summer, when longer forecasts are more reliable I've seen this a lot higher, but right now even 65% is probably optimistic. As for metcheck, it more or less uses the same GFS model as XC (wi...

Probably best if I give a link. This is for Largs.

Re: XC Weather and the coming storm . . .

Its a characteristic of the GFS model used by XC (and most of the free forecast sites), but its a real pain for passage planning. The French meteo-consult.co.uk site has a Compare Models function that shows what the GFS, Arpege and their own model predicts. GFS is often out of agreement with the oth...

Re: Interesting plans from Calmac

The "road bridges" idea would mean large spikes in traffic using roads unable to carry the current levels. The single track section approaching Tobermory would be blocked as traffic off the Tobermory arrival heading east for Craignure met those off the Craignure arrival headed for Tober. T...
